Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State Greater Allegheny will host its spring commencement at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, in Wunderely Gymnasium. Chancellor Curtiss E. Porter will preside as diplomas are conferred to 33 individuals receiving baccalaureate and associate degrees. The keynote speaker will be John Lydon, chief executive officer (CEO) at the Auberle and Pauline Auberle Foundation.

Through the end of summer 2011, Penn State has conferred a total of 682,318 degrees. At the conclusion of the fall 2011 semester, the University's total number of graduates should approach 687,043. This fall Penn State expects to award approximately 4,725 diplomas to students University-wide who are completing 272 associate, 3,499 baccalaureate, 720 master's, 2 medical, 13 law and 219 doctoral degrees. University Park fall commencement scheduled for Dec. 19

Penn State will confer an anticipated eight associate degrees and 2,386 baccalaureate degrees on Saturday, Dec. 19, at the University Park campus during three fall commencement ceremonies, over which Penn State President Graham B. Spanier will preside. He will also lead the Graduate School commencement for an expected 691 graduate students. At other Penn State campuses, an estimated 285 students will graduate with associate degrees, 881 with baccalaureate degrees and 265 with graduate degrees, for a University-wide total of 4,561 fall graduates.
