Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State York is joining again with the York Area Association for the Education of Young Children (YAAEYC) for the 2011 Fall Early Childhood Conference on Saturday, Oct. 1. The events, to be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., will take place in the conference center at Penn State York. More than 300 people are registered for the conference and registration is closed. (more)

A legacy of compassion and leadership continues after retirement

Fred Vondracek, professor emeritus of human development, has retired from Penn State after forty-one years of service. He was an integral part of the growth of a renowned department, held a multitude of leadership positions, and revolutionized the University's child care services.

Fred Vondracek retired on June 30, 2010, after a 41-year tenure at Penn State. Now a professor emeritus of human development, Vondracek had a profound impact on the people he worked with and on the University as a whole. He held a multitude of academic leadership roles, helped shape and build a department and a college, broadened Penn State's international reach and paved the way to improve work-life balance for Penn State employees. Addressing the University Park campus community's need for additional child care, the Penn State Board of Trustees Friday (Jan. 22) approved final plans for and the naming of a new child care center. The Gary Schultz Child Care Center at Hort Woods will accommodate up to 170 children in a new 21,500-square-foot facility on the corner of Park Avenue and Allen Road, adjacent to Hort Woods. (more)

Penn State Erie to acquire Early Learning Center facility

Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will purchase the facility that is home to its Early Learning Center in Knowledge Park on the southeastern edge of campus, as approved by the Penn State Board of Trustees on Sept. 11. The parcel of land on which the Early Learning Center sits is part of more than 200 acres of land, including buildings and available lots, that the college currently leases to the Greater Erie Industrial Development Corporation (GEIDC) to operate Knowledge Park. Children's Learning Center receives funding to help student-parents

Pennsylvania College of Technology's Children's Learning Center has been approved for funding from a Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) grant. The funds help to subsidize the cost of child care for Penn College students whose income makes them eligible for federal Pell Grants. Part of the money is also used to fund a part-time teacher assistant. (more)

Hershey Medical Center's onsite child care center), was one of four employees to represent the center at the World Forum Conference in Belfast, Ireland in June. The World Forum brings together early care and education professionals from more than 70 countries to discuss ways to improve the quality of services for young children across diverse settings. A dozen local adults recently completed the first comprehensive Child Development Associate (CDA) credential class offered at Penn State Fayette. The CDA credential is a national certification program designed for individuals who work in child care with infants and toddlers or preschoolers in group settings, family care or home visiting situations.
