Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State Laureate Kim Cook to perform at Penn State Fayette

Penn State Laureate and world-renown cellist Kim Cook will be visiting Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, in early December and will perform in a mid-day public event on Dec. 8 in the Maggie Hardy Magerko Auditorium in the Community Center. Area high school music students have been invited, and the general public also is encouraged to attend this free event. Beginning at 11:30 a.m. there will be a "Getting to Know the Cello: A Conversation with Penn State Laureate Kim Cook." From noon to 1 p.m. will be performances by Cook and the Penn State Fayette Choir. (more)

Kim Cook, professor of music in cello in the College of Arts and Architecture, has been named the University's inaugural Penn State Laureate. This distinguished faculty member will bring an enhanced level of social, cultural, artistic and human perspective and awareness to a broad array of audiences. Cook will be assigned half time to serve as the University Laureate for one academic year. The laureate will be a highly visible representative of Penn State who will appear regularly at events University-wide and throughout the Commonwealth at community and statewide events. (more)
