A group of Penn State faculty members recently received an American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award in the category of Information Technology. "Integrating Technology in Nursing Education: Tools for the Knowledge Era," published by Jones and Bartlett Learning, was co-authored by Kathleen Mastrian, associate professor and program coordinator for nursing at Penn State Shenango; Dee McGonigle, retired associate professor of nursing in information sciences and technology and computational science at Penn State New Kensington; Wendy L. Mahan, instructional designer with the College of Health and Human Development and the School of Nursing; and Brett Bixler, instructional designer with Education Technology Services, both Penn State University Park campus.
The AJN Book of the Year award is a long-standing tradition that recognizes excellence in nursing publishing. Since 1969, the American Journal of Nursing has been publishing an annual list of the best in nursing publishing. Published in the January issue of the journal, the AJN Book of the Year program is a prestigious competition that garners the attention of its 342,000 readers, as well as librarians and faculty who are not subscribers. Sean Patrick Griffin, associate professor of criminal justice at Penn State Abington and critically acclaimed author, soon will be busy with book signings and interviews as his much-anticipated book, "Gaming the Game," is released later this week. A nonfiction true-crime work, "Gaming the Game" tells the story of the recent NBA betting scandal and the Philadelphia-area professional gambler -- Jimmy Battista -- who made it happen. Two Penn State Brandywine faculty members shared their expertise on language and culture in a new book published by the University of Michigan Press. Myra M. Goldschmidt, associate professor of English, and Debbie Lamb Ousey, instructor of English as a Second Language (ESL), are the authors of "Teaching Developmental Immigrant Students in Undergraduate Programs: A Practical Guide." A newly released book chronicles the conflicts, challenges, and successes of a College of Education faculty member who, as an oral deaf child, was mainstreamed in public school. Joseph M. Valente, assistant professor of early childhood education, is author of "d/Deaf and d/Dumb: A Portrait of a Deaf Kid as a Young Superhero." The book's cover was illustrated by Jarod Rosello, a graduate student in Penn State's College of Education. (more)
Adam J. Sorkin, distinguished professor of English at Penn State Brandywine, recently published an English translation of "No Way Out of Hadesburg and Other Poems" by Ioan Es. Pop. The book was published by the University of Plymouth Press in England in late 2010.
With more than 5,200 pages of text and appendices, Professor Sam Thompson's four-volume treatise "Mergers, Acquisitions and Tender Offers: Law and Strategies" published by the Practicing Law Institute (PLI), covers the basics in the complex mergers and acquisitions (M&A) arena and then some. "It details the substantive areas, such as contracts, corporate law, securities, tax and antitrust. In addition, it then looks at regulatory issues in specific industries such as banking, telecom and health care. It's basically everything I know about M&A," Thompson said. As director of Penn State's Center for the Study of Mergers and Acquisitions, that covers considerable ground. (more)
Ben Cramer, a post-doctoral scholar in the College of Communications, authored a book titled "Freedom of Environmental Information" that became available for sale nationwide in early January. The book focuses on issues with the U.S. government's Freedom of Information Act and the National Environmental Policy Act. These acts require government documents to be transparent and available to all American citizens. (more)
