A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

John Chapin, professor of communications, is the author of "Third-person perception and myths about crime and victims of crime." Mari B. Pierce, assistant professor of administration of justice, wrote "Continuing the Conversation - The Operationalization of Focal Concerns Perspective: Assessing Sentencing Decisions for Criminal Child Neglect." John Chapin, professor of communications at Penn State Beaver, is the recipient of three state and local awards this month. He received the 2012 United States House of Representatives Congressional Victims' Rights Caucus Certificate awarded by Congressman Jim Costa and Congressman Ted Poe, co-chairs of the Congressional Victims' Rights Caucus for work on behalf of victims of crime. Chapin also received the 2012 Outstanding Citizenship Award presented by Beaver County District Attorney Anthony Berosh in recognition of his service to Beaver County law enforcement. In addition, PA Governor Tom Corbett named Chapin the recipient of the 2012 Governor's Victim Service Pathfinder Organizational Capacity Building Award which is awarded as part of the Western Regional Training Initiative subcommittee. The 44th annual Penn State Beaver Spring Awards Banquet was held recently on campus to celebrate student achievements throughout the academic year.
Stephen Dusicsko, a junior business major from Lake City, received the University's highest annual student honor, the prestigious Eric A. and Josephine S. Walker Award, which recognizes a student's highest achievements in and out of the classroom at each Penn State campus. Darlene Coulanges, a sophomore health and human development major from Providence, R.I., and a finalist for the Walker Award, was named Outstanding Student of the Year. A variety of other student achievement awards were presented.

Tansey Ochs always hoped she'd win the Eric A. and Josephine S. Walker Award. The Penn State New Kensington student's wish came true last Friday night when she received the honor, which is given annually to one student on each Penn State campus. Established in 1980, the award recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding character, scholarship and leadership. (more)

Penn State York honored the academic achievements and service of its outstanding students, faculty, and staff for the 2011-12 academic year during the 41st Annual Academic Awards Program, Sunday, April 22 at Heritage Hills Golf Resort & Conference Center in York, Pa. More than 90 academic and service awards were presented following a 6 p.m. dinner.

Awards were presented by a variety of campus groups and several community organizations including the Rotary Club of York and the York County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association. Highlights of the program were the presentation of the Eric A. and Josephine S. Walker Award, the James H. Burness Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Penn State York Advising Award, and the Clark E. Fisher Memorial Award.

The Eric A. and Josephine S. Walker Award, the most prestigious student award of the evening, was presented to Joshua D. Czerski. (more)

For the second consecutive year, the Alle-Kiski Society of the Penn State Alumni Association will co-sponsor the reception for student honorees at Penn State New Kensington's annual Academic and Student Achievement awards ceremony. The society, based at Penn State New Kensington, donated $500 to help recognize more than 100 students for their accomplishments during the fall and spring semesters. The "Celebration of Excellence" awards ceremony is set for 7 p.m. Friday, April 27, in the campus' Forum Theatre. (more)
