Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Exhibit 'The Railroad in American Life' on display May 31 at HUB

The HUB-Robeson Galleries will display an exciting new collection of railroad art assembled from all over the United States in the HUB Gallery, at the HUB-Robeson Center on the University Park campus, from May 31 through July 29. The exhibit will feature 30 American railroad artists from all parts of the country. They include J. Craig Thorpe from Washington state, who does work for Amtrak, as well as GE's locomotive division and the Union Tank Car Company, Angela Trotta Thomas of New Jersey, who is known to many for her Lionel catalog covers, and Frank Crowe in Georgia, whose works hang in the state capitol. An artist's reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on June 8. (more)

The Center for the Performing Arts Classical Music Project -- soon to begin its second season -- demonstrates the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven and other classical composers is alive and well in the 21st century. The three-year Classical Music Project, supported by a $470,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation plus an additional $317,000 from various Penn State partners, provides unprecedented opportunities to connect students, faculty and the community with classical music artists and programs.
