Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Pearson to testify before U.S. Senate Committee on Aging

Penn State Law Professor Katherine Pearson has been invited to testify before the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging about the regulation of continuing care retirement communities. Senator Herb Kohl of Wisconsin called for evaluation of CCRC practices in 2009, and Pearson's testimony will coincide with the July 22, 2010, release of a GAO report citing her work on the topic on regulation of continuing care retirement communities. Aging populations have generated legal, ethical and social policy questions that intrigue researchers in many disciplines around the globe. Specialized legal knowledge often plays an important role in successful advocacy for older adults, and the search for more effective solutions is taking Katherine C. Pearson, a professor at Penn State's Dickinson School of Law and specialist in U.S. domestic elder law, on a yearlong research mission. (more)

A new study on old rats by a Penn State researcher will shed light on the connection between estrogen deficiency, heart disease and aging in women. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women over the age of 75. After menopause, women lose their ability to produce the hormone estrogen and researchers believe that low estrogen levels somehow make women more vulnerable to heart disease and heart attack.

Faculty member earns Fulbright award to study long-term care

A key focus of Cynthia Mara's entire working life has been long-term care. That commitment has now earned her a Fulbright Visiting Research Chair at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, where the Penn State Harrisburg associate professor of health-care administration and policy will investigate Canada's long-term care system in comparison to the United States'. Responding to this trend, a new Penn State center will pursue interdisciplinary research that enhances independent living opportunities for older Americans in their homes and their communities and also fosters their physical, emotional and social well-being. Public meeting discusses positive aging and creative retirement

WPSU and OLLI at Penn State present a public discussion to provide insight to those entering and in late adulthood. A group of experts on positive aging will participate in a discussion on the opportunities and challenges that arise during what is known as "Third Age," the years between 50 and 80. The public is welcome to be part of this broadcast event, titled "Third Age: Designing the Second Half of Life," and can participate with their questions and comments at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, in the lobby of the Outreach Building in Penn State's Innovation Park.
