More than 1,000 slated to receive engineering degrees at commencement

A pioneering astronaut and U.S. Air Force colonel, Penn State Distinguished Alumnus Guion S. "Guy" Bluford has been awarded The Pennsylvania Society's Gold Medal for Distinguished Achievement. Bluford received the honor on Dec. 10 at the Pennsylvania Society's 113th Annual Dinner. A nonprofit charitable organization with nearly 2,000 members, the Society honors achievement and excellence and celebrates service to the Commonwealth and humanity. The Gold Medal is presented each year to a prominent person "in recognition of leadership, citizenship and contributions to the arts, science, education and industry," according to the Society. An electric aircraft team led by Jack W. Langelaan, assistant professor of aerospace engineering, won the largest aviation prize in history this week at Comparative Aircraft Flight Efficiency Foundation Green Flight Challenge in California.

A Penn State Engineering team led by Jack W. Langelaan, assistant professor of aerospace engineering, took home first place and $1.35 million in prize money in the Comparative Aircraft Flight Efficiency (CAFE) Foundation Green Flight Challenge held on Oct. 4. This is the largest prize ever awarded in aviation history, according to the agency.

The contest, held in Santa Rosa, Calif., challenges teams to design and build an electric aircraft capable of flying at an average speed of at least 100 mph over a 200-mile course while achieving a fuel efficiency greater than 200 passenger miles per gallon equivalent. (more)

Penn State was ranked the top engineering school for aerospace and defense company recruitment in the 2011 Aviation Week Workforce Study.

In the study, Aviation Week polled aerospace and defense companies to find out from which institutions they hire the most graduates. The respondents ranked the universities based on the school's reputation, degree programs offered, location and diversity. (more)
