Lucy Phua of Surrey in British Columbia, Canada, will make her first visit to Penn State's University Park campus to receive her master's degree in adult education during commencement ceremonies on May 15. Phua completed her degree online, but is looking forward to meeting some of her professors and classmates in person during her one-week visit. (more)

Dr. Frank Mayadas, a program director at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and Dr. Gary Miller, the first executive director of Penn State World Campus, were honored at a ceremony during the Penn State Outreach Appreciation Dinner on Sept. 17. (more)
Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, invites adults who are considering starting college or returning to their studies to attend an adult-student undergraduate admissions open house on Thursday, Oct. 1. The open house begins at 5:30 p.m. with a one-hour exhibit fair in Roche Hall, located in the college's School of Science complex. A seminar on admissions and financial aid will follow at 6:30 p.m. The evening ends with individual admissions counseling sessions. (more)
The International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) has awarded the 2009 Prize of Excellence for Lifetime Contributions to the Field to former Associate Vice President for Outreach Gary E. Miller. ICDE, recognized by the United Nations, is a global network of distance and online education institutions. The council promotes intercultural co-operation and understanding through flexible and online learning throughout the world. Miller, who retired in 2007 after more than 30 years of service, is executive director emeritus for the Penn State World Campus. (more)
The New Choices/New Options career-development initiative at Pennsylvania College of Technology has received $159,247 in grant funding for 2008-09. The free program is funded by the state Department of Education: Bureau of Career and Technical Education and the state Department of Labor & Industry. Three-week workshops are offered several times annually. (more)
When economic clouds darken, the cost of education becomes harder to justify for adult students, even though continuing their education is crucial to accessing new economic opportunities. To help meet those financial challenges, the Penn State World Campus staff created the World Campus Student Fund, a fund that provides aid for students in financial need. (more)
A college degree can increase a person's lifetime earnings by $1.2 million over a high school diploma, but some students who start college don't finish. That's true for nearly 300,000 adults in the Greater Philadelphia region who have at least one year's worth of college credits. Graduate! Philadelphia, an organization created to help these adults, has invited Penn State to join its workforce development effort. (more)
Every semester, thousands of adults accept the challenge to resume their college educations at Penn State. One of those adult learners, Yumi Lee, a human development and family studies major, is the 2008 recipient of the Penn State Outstanding Adult Student Award presented by the Division of Student Affairs and Penn State Outreach.
