The next episode of "World on Trial", an international human rights public television and Web-based interactive series produced by Penn State University Dickinson School of Law, the School of International Affairs and WPSU, will examine the legality of the use of unmanned drones by the U.S. government to target suspected terrorists. The new episode will be filmed in the fall and information about specific air dates will be announced as it is available. The new television and interactive series, "World on Trial," will premiere on public television stations beginning Jan. 31 (see schedule). The program brings together the best legal talent in the world to argue both sides of sharply contested human rights issues before live juries. The inaugural episode deals with the French law prohibiting conspicuous religious attire in public schools. The program asks jurors and viewers to consider whether the law is a violation of the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The program will air at 6 and 9 p.m. on Jan. 31 on WPSU on PBS World, and at 9 p.m. on Feb. 2 on WPSU HD. (more)

Penn State Public Broadcasting released a preview of the pilot episode of "World on Trial," an educational television and interactive Web series, that brings together the best legal talent in the world to argue both sides of sharply contested human rights issues. "It's extremely gratifying to see the pilot episode coming together," said Phil McConnaughay, dean of the Penn State University Dickinson School of Law and an executive producer of the series. "In addition to the courtroom arguments viewers get a look inside how juries from around the world would debate these issues as they render verdicts." (more)

The Apfelbaum Family Courtroom was crowded with cameras, equipment and people from several continents while five Penn State jurors awaited opening statements for the pilot episode of World on Trial. In 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted without a single dissenting vote. It was the first time in human history that a set of individual human rights were recognized and internationally agreed upon, explained creator and host of "World on Trial" Professor Randall Robinson of Penn State Law. The state-of-the-art courtroom at Penn State Law will transform into the set for a new television and interactive series, "World on Trial," where viewers around the world will render verdicts on provocative international human rights issues. Cherie Booth, the eminent human rights barrister and wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, will preside over the first trial, which will be on the French "headscarf law" and will be filmed on Sept. 20. "World on Trial" is a multimedia, educational series examining sharply contested international human rights issues in the context of courtroom trials before live multinational juries. The series is a collaboration of an Emmy-Award winning team from Penn State Public Broadcasting, Penn State Law and The School of International Affairs. (more)
