New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Most people don't think about the metal parts that make up things they use daily, from car parts to appliances to medical equipment. The manufacturing of these pieces has historically been a large, unique industry in Pennsylvania. However, like many industries, it is facing job loss and global competition. In a new report, Penn State researchers have explored what can be done to support and maintain this industry, particularly in light of weak car sales. (more)

Penn State drills down to project natural gas royalties

One of the top questions on the minds of Pennsylvania landowners these days is how much money might they see in royalties from drilling natural gas in the Marcellus Shale. While individual royalties will vary, Penn State's Workforce Education and Development Initiative has released its forecast of the potential impact of increased royalty income. According to the report, natural gas royalty income will create a positive impact on Pennsylvania employment, economic output, personal income and population. (more)
