A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Nurses learn healing touch in Wilkes-Barre Northern Tier Center course

A group of registered nurses gathered recently for a Penn State Wilkes-Barre Northern Tier Center course dedicated to a lost nursing art: massage. The nurses learned basic massage techniques to improve circulation, promote relaxation and ease pain. In addition, the nurses practiced methods that will be used to provide post-event massages for cyclists in the 100-mile Tour de Shunk, a charity bike ride scheduled for Sept. 18 that benefits the Lance Armstrong Foundation. On Sunday, Aug. 28, more than 120 artisans, crafters, musicians, and food vendors will converge on the Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus in Lehman for the 27th annual Arts at Hayfield Summer Festival from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., rain or shine, on the campus grounds. Featuring a new performing group, the Daisy Jug Band, local and regional performers will take the stage starting at 11:30 a.m. (more)

More than $8,000 was raised by the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Constituent Society's 16th annual "Masters" Golf Tournament, held July 15 at Blue Ridge Trail Golf Club in Mountaintop, Pa. The event topped last year's tournament total by more than $1,200. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Alumni Society's scholarship fund, the Student Mentor Program, Academic Excellence Awards, and other initiatives that help the students at the Wilkes-Barre campus.
