A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Those who completed the six-month program were given a travel certificate on Feb. 3 in the Founder's Lounge at the Bryce Jordan Center on Penn State's University Park campus. (more)

Nearly 100 University administrators, state leaders and community members gathered at the University Park Airport to recognize the completion of its new airport traffic control tower. After six months under construction, the new control tower at the University Park Airport has taken on an identifiable shape. With the help of a heavy-lift crane, workers hoisted the 29.5-ton steel frame of the tower's control cab and placed it atop the tower's base on May 27, marking a major milestone in the construction effort. Final plans for air traffic control tower approved

Penn State's Board of Trustees today (Sept. 11) approved the final design and authorized the awarding of contracts for the construction of an air traffic control tower at University Park Airport, as designed by Mead & Hunt Inc. Architects of Madison, Wis. The tower will improve efficiency and safety at and around the airport. The height and placement of the tower site were determined by the Federal Aviation Administration using criteria that would allow a view of critical aircraft operation areas. (more)

The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) State College Chapter 1327 will hold an Aviation Awareness Day this Saturday, Aug. 8, at the University Park Airport General Aviation Terminal located at 2535 Fox Hill Road, State College. Admission is free and the event is open to the public from 8 a.m. until noon. The event will include a display of more than 20 airplanes, free introductory airplane rides for youth age 8 to 17 and a pancake breakfast. (more)

On Wednesday evening (May 27) approximately 260 volunteers and emergency service personnel from across the greater State College and Bellefonte region converged on University Park Airport for a full-scale disaster drill. The emergency response exercise involved local police and fire departments, emergency medical services, the county HazMat teams and several local, state and federal government and community agencies, along with on-site airport response crews. Centre County emergency radio dispatchers also were involved in the exercise. The Federal Aviation Administration requires all commercial airports to conduct full-scale, on-site exercises of emergency response plans every three years. (more)

Third daily Detroit flight to begin at University Park Airport in June

University Park Airport has announced that Northwest/Delta will provide a third daily flight to Detroit Metropolitan Airport beginning June 4. The flight will arrive at University Park at 12:12 p.m. and depart at 12:40 p.m. daily. (more)
