Emergency personnel from Penn State and municipalities throughout the Centre Region will participate in a full-scale emergency response exercise at the University Park Airport from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 23. The airport will be open and operating under a normal schedule during this drill. Traffic may be heavier than normal, however, so travelers should allow extra time to get to the airport. (more)
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a grant of $143,000 to Penn State to investigate how faculty create and manage personal information collections. Led by Associate Librarian Ellysa Stern Cahoy and Associate Professor of Science Education Scott McDonald, the 15-month ethnographic study will examine in detail how faculty save, share, cite and archive scholarly information. Free public gardening workshops will be a featured attraction when the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Centre County hold their annual Garden Fair and Plant Sale, May 19. A blood drive for the American Red Cross will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 31 in Kunkle Lounge in Hammond Building on Penn State's University Park campus. The event is sponsored by the Engineering Graduate Student Council and College of Engineering. (more)
Penn State's Hospitality Services has just installed a sophisticated utility control system which is expected to save its two hotels about $350,000 a year. As the new control systems are activated all hotel employees are being challenged to play a key role in energy conservation. (more)
A dramatic reading of his one-woman play, "Blavatsky," marks the centenary of Penn State professor and author Warren Sylvester Smith (1912-1984). "Blavatsky" will be performed at the State Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged. (more)
Tuition scholarships are available for high school and college students, including Penn State students from campuses across the commonwealth, to learn Arabic, through a $105,000 federal grant received by the Penn State Department of Comparative Literature, in the School of Languages and Literatures. Students can earn Penn State credits in a special four-week intensive Arabic course, called the STARTALK Arabic Academy, to be offered June 11 - July 6 on the University Park campus. In addition, scholarships from other sources also are available for high school students who wish to study Turkish, Chinese, or Russian through this summer's Language Institute. Beginning Monday, May 7, sections of Curtin Road between Bigler Road and University Drive on the University Park campus will be closed for the installation of chilled water lines. Construction will take place in phases, running consecutively from May 7 to Aug. 10. Parking areas at Wagner, Shields and IM buildings will be affected, as will the Campus Shuttle and several CATA bus routes. (more)
