Mike Rybar made final adjustments to the Penn State Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering teams Goldberg machine prior to the 2012 Rube Goldberg competition held on Feb. 11 at Penn State's Nittany Lion Inn. Rybar and his team created a musically themed machine that needed to complete a simple task (inflate a balloon) in twenty or more elaborate steps. The annual competition is named for cartoonist Rube Goldberg who created famous artwork depicting overly complicated machines doing everyday tasks.

There are no definitive findings that Marcellus Shale drilling activity has affected crime rates in Pennsylvania, but more study is needed, according to a preliminary report conducted recently by the Justice Center for Research at Penn State. The report was produced in response to public concerns that crime rates may be on the rise in areas experiencing drilling-related population growth. (more)

Students lead community efforts to curb excessive drinking event

A committee of Penn State student leaders, campus representatives and State College community leaders including Mayor Elizabeth Goreham has united against State Patty's Day, an excessive drinking event that has taken place since 2007 in downtown State College. The committee is asking local businesses to curtail their participation and instead join in promoting a weekend of community-friendly volunteer activities. (more)

Penn State University Police are investigating several incidents in which an unknown male contacted multiple female students offering them $500 Victoria's Secret gift cards. The male would refuse to identify himself and also would request to meet the students in person. Anyone who has experienced similar activity or has any information should contact University Police at 814-863-1111 or Centre County Crime Stoppers at 1-877-99-CRIME. Blasting to begin at new ice arena site; disturbance to be minimal

Underground blasting will begin Monday, Feb. 20, as part of site excavation for the new Pegula Ice Arena on the University Park campus, near the intersection of University Drive and Curtin Road. The blasts, which will take place twice a day from Monday to Friday for about six weeks, will make way for the arena's foundation and are a routine part of the excavation process. Penn State's Office of Physical Plant said there will be some noise associated with the blasts, but that the ground will contain and absorb most of the sound produced. (more)

Penn State's minor in sexuality and gender studies is sponsoring a symposium in the Queer Visual Culture (QVC) series on the topic of "Sexual Difficulty in Late 20th-Century Art" from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 17, in the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium at the Palmer Museum of Art on Penn State's University Park campus. Three scholars will offer papers taking various perspectives on the relationship between difficulty and sexuality in modern art. (more)

Uganda is a nation of children. About half of the country's more than 33 million people are younger than 14. Spirit of Uganda, a professional training and touring program of the nonprofit organization Empower African Children, comes to Penn State's Eisenhower Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, to share the music and dance of the lush and diverse East African country.
