Jill Buchanan, a nurse practitioner with University Health Services (UHS) has received the 2012 Ally Recognition Award from Penn State's Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equity (CLGBTE). Presented during the Lavender Graduation Ceremony held April 20, the Ally Award is given to an individual within the University community who has shown outstanding service regarding LGBTQ concerns. Margaret Spear, director of University Health Services, was recently named vice chair of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) Board of Directors. Spear represents the American College Health Association (ACHA) on the AAAHC board. Other officers named include Karen McKellar, chair (representing the Medical Group Management Association); W. Patrick Davey, MD, MBA, FACP, treasurer (representing the American Academy of Dermatology); and Timothy Peterson, MD, treasurer (representing the the AAAHC Surveyor Training and Education Committee). The Penn State Student Health Center recently received the results of a University energy audit. Kilowatt hours (KWh) used at the health center for 2011 totaled 760,894. The number of KWh hours of energy used in previous years were 862,511 (2010) and 980,896 (2009). (more)
The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine, Gardasil, will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 19 during a free clinic at the Student Health Center. The Pennsylvania Department of Health has provided the vaccine to University Health Services free of charge for use by all male and female students and their spouses (between the ages of 18 and 26). After the free vaccine clinics end, UHS will continue to offer Gardasil at full price. The vaccine clinic will be held in 205 Student Health Center. (more)
A new page on the Penn State University Health Services (UHS) website provides health care resources for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students. "It is our goal to provide excellent and accessible care to all Penn State students," said UHS Director Margaret Spear. "Our hope is that this resource page will facilitate and enrich dialog between LGBT students and their health care providers and result in the highest quality care possible." (more)
Robin Oliver recently joined the staff of University Health Services (UHS), Penn State's student health service at the University Park campus. Oliver will serve as chief gynecologist for Women's Health.
A graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Oliver brings over 20 years of clinical experience to UHS. Prior to joining Penn State, Oliver served as staff physician with Mount Nittany Physician Group and as assistant clinical professor of obstetrics in gynecology for the College of Medicine, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. A former department chair for obstetrics and gynecology at Mount Nittany Medical Center, Oliver also has served on the board for Centre Medical and Surgical Associates. (more)

Penn State students who are interested in promoting health among their peers can apply to participate in HealthWorks, a student peer education and outreach program within University Health Services (UHS). Membership applications will be accepted through March 2 for the 2012 - 2013 school year. (more)
Each semester University Health Services (UHS) sees a few cases of Chickenpox. UHS recommends that Penn State students check their health record for adequate immunization against Chickenpox. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines adequate immunization as two doses of the Varicella (Chickenpox) vaccine for those who have not had the disease. Vaccination is also recommended for individuals who were infected with a mild case (just a few chickenpox lesions). (more)
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Qualitest Pharmaceuticals have recalled the following birth control pills: Cyclafem 7/7/7, Cyclafem 1/35, Emoquette, Gildess FE 1.5/30, Gildess FE 1/20, Orsythia, Previfem and Tri-Previfem. The University Health Services (UHS) pharmacy on the University Park campus of Penn State does not stock any of the recalled pills. (more)
