New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Students join Alpha Sigma Lambda, adult honor society at York

Thirty-one outstanding adult students from the area were inducted into the Penn State York Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda during ceremonies on Thursday, May 3, in the Community Room of the Joe and Rosie Ruhl Student Community Center. Alpha Sigma Lambda is a national honor society that recognizes the unique achievements demonstrated by adult students in higher education programs. Students inducted into the organization must have a grade-point average of 3.2 or higher. (more)

Baseball game June 22 to benefit scholarship fund at Penn State York

The York Revolution and the Lancaster Barnstormers baseball teams will face-off at Sovereign Bank Stadium, York, Pa., Friday, June 22, and local Penn State fans will gather to enjoy a picnic, watch the game, and raise money for Penn State York's Pay It Forward Scholarship. Fans, friends, family, alumni, and others are invited to join the group, beginning with a two-hour buffet catered by Maewyn's Irish Pub and Restaurant at 5:45 p.m., with the game to follow at 6:30 p.m. Ticket includes the buffet, baseball game, and a T-shirt, all for $25 for adults and $13 for youth (4-10-years-old). Half of the ticket price goes to the Pay It Forward Scholarship Fund.
Youth tickets include a playground wristband. (more)

New SGA officers elected for 2012-13 academic year

The new Student Government Association officers for Penn State New Kensington recently were named. The 2012-13 officers were elected in April.

According to Lauren Blum, who works closely with the SGA treasurer and vice president, the students are looking forward to serving their student body. Blum is SGA co-adviser along with Director of Student Affairs Theresa Bonk. (more)

A commonly held belief that college students are only interested in courses where they can earn an "easy A" is not supported by a Penn State research study. What college students really value is how much they feel they learn in a course, according to recent findings from a survey.

"In our surveys of students at University Park, we found the single best predictor of how much students liked and positively evaluated the quality of instruction in courses was how much they had learned," said Fern K. Willits, distinguished professor emerita of rural sociology in the College of Agricultural Sciences, one of the members of the research team. "The belief that difficult courses and too much classwork will result in low student ratings is not supported by our data." (more)

Ochs wins Walker Award

Tansey Ochs always hoped she'd win the Eric A. and Josephine S. Walker Award. The Penn State New Kensington student's wish came true last Friday night when she received the honor, which is given annually to one student on each Penn State campus. Established in 1980, the award recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding character, scholarship and leadership. (more)

Penn State York honored the academic achievements and service of its outstanding students, faculty, and staff for the 2011-12 academic year during the 41st Annual Academic Awards Program, Sunday, April 22 at Heritage Hills Golf Resort & Conference Center in York, Pa. More than 90 academic and service awards were presented following a 6 p.m. dinner.

Awards were presented by a variety of campus groups and several community organizations including the Rotary Club of York and the York County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association. Highlights of the program were the presentation of the Eric A. and Josephine S. Walker Award, the James H. Burness Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Penn State York Advising Award, and the Clark E. Fisher Memorial Award.

The Eric A. and Josephine S. Walker Award, the most prestigious student award of the evening, was presented to Joshua D. Czerski. (more)

Speakers Series concluded with presentation on the Navajo Nation

Penn State Beaver students and faculty who spent last month's spring break working and living with the Navajo Nation recently gave a presentation about their experiences. The program was the final event in the 2011-2012 Penn State Beaver Faculty Speakers Series. The series will resume in the fall semester. The group of 11 students, faculty, and staff spent the week in Tuba City, Arizona, where they tutored classes in the local boarding school, served Meals on Wheels for the Senior Center, volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club, and cleaned Navajo residents' homes. Evenings were focused on learning about the Navajo Nation culture, including creation stories, dances, and ceremonies. In addition, the group visited several famous sites, including the Grand Canyon and the Painted Desert. The trip was led by JoAnn Chirico, senior instructor in sociology; Irene Wolf, senior instructor in philosophy, and Robin Schreck, student activities and residence life coordinator.
