With four guide ropes attached to it, the east-side clock face is raised into position. While it didn't seem that windy on the ground on Saturday, Jan. 28, winds higher up were strong, requiring extra guidance to bring the clock face safely to the Old Main bell tower.

Ben White of New Vibrations Audio and Video works on a ledge of the Old Main bell tower, to remove the speakers from the old chime system. The company installed a new carillon system today (Jan. 27) that will play a digital recording made of the original Old Main bell that now sits adjacent to Old Main and other bells of comparable sizes.

The funeral procession for Joe Paterno made its way past Beaver Stadium and down Porter Road as crowds applauded on Jan. 25. Thousands lined the procession route through the University Park campus and downtown State College to bid a last farewell to Joe Paterno.

Katie Knobloch and Andrew Adamietz, members of the a capella group Blue in the Face, shared a candle at the vigil held Sunday, Jan. 22, to mourn the death of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, who passed away earlier in the day. Several thousand members of the Penn State and State College community came out to the Old Main lawn on Penn State's University Park campus for the vigil.

The University Office of Global Programs (UOGP) is now accepting nominations for the Ardeth and Norman Frisbey International Student Award. This award honors and recognizes outstanding contributions to international understanding by graduate and undergraduate international students (holding non-immigrant status) enrolled in a full-time academic program at any Penn State campus. Exemplary contributions furthering international understanding consist of academic, athletic, or other extra-curricular campus activities and/or community involvement in school or civic group programs or service projects. Past recipients have made contributions in more than one area. (more)

Two doses of Chickenpox vaccine recommended

Each semester University Health Services (UHS) sees a few cases of Chickenpox. UHS recommends that Penn State students check their health record for adequate immunization against Chickenpox. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines adequate immunization as two doses of the Varicella (Chickenpox) vaccine for those who have not had the disease. Vaccination is also recommended for individuals who were infected with a mild case (just a few chickenpox lesions). (more)

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Qualitest Pharmaceuticals have recalled the following birth control pills: Cyclafem 7/7/7, Cyclafem 1/35, Emoquette, Gildess FE 1.5/30, Gildess FE 1/20, Orsythia, Previfem and Tri-Previfem. The University Health Services (UHS) pharmacy on the University Park campus of Penn State does not stock any of the recalled pills. (more)

Nominations are being accepted for the Spirit of Internationalization Award which acknowledges women from Penn State University and the local community who excel in academic achievements, artistic excellence, volunteerism in international organizations or dedication to advancing the status of women. The award will be presented by Penn State's University Office of Global Programs at their fifth annual breakfast in celebration of International Women's Day. Outdoor adventure race, 'Extreme Stater,' open to Penn State students

The "Extreme Stater" competition, designed for adventure-seeking undergraduate students on Penn State's University Park campus, will be held April 14. Twenty-five teams will compete on Stone Valley's outdoor obstacle course, which includes vertical challenges, running, team obstacles and more. Registration for the event begins Monday, March 12 in the Adventure Recreation Center, Room 133A of the White Building on the University Park campus. Early registration may be necessary to guarantee a spot. (more)
