Mike Rybar made final adjustments to the Penn State Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering teams Goldberg machine prior to the 2012 Rube Goldberg competition held on Feb. 11 at Penn State's Nittany Lion Inn. Rybar and his team created a musically themed machine that needed to complete a simple task (inflate a balloon) in twenty or more elaborate steps. The annual competition is named for cartoonist Rube Goldberg who created famous artwork depicting overly complicated machines doing everyday tasks.

Career Services continues workshop series for students and alumni

Penn State Shenango Career Services will continue its series of workshops for current students and Penn State alumni when it offers a session titled "Winning Interview Skills" from 12:15 to 1 p.m. or 4 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22 in Sharon Hall, Room 105. The workshop will teach participants skills for preparing for a positive interview experience. (more)

Penn State Shenango Drama Club has announced two productions this spring: a staged reading of Emily Mann's "Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years" will be given at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, as a benefit for the Community Food Warehouse. Later, on April 13 and 14, a series of one-acts will be offered each evening under the theme: "Trifles and Other Important Things." All events will take place in the Penn State Shenango auditorium, located in downtown Sharon, Pa. Tickets for "Having Our Say" are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors, with $1 off any regular admission with the donation of a nonperishable item for the Community Food Warehouse. (more)

Penn State Shenango will be showing the live coverage of Joe Paterno's memorial service, "A Memorial For Joe," in the Penn State Shenango Auditorium located on Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. The community is invited to attend. The memorial service is being held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, the Bryce Jordan Center on Penn State's University Park campus. The Penn State Shenango Alumni Society will hold its Friends of Penn State Annual Dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the campus' auditorium. Community members are invited to attend and hear this year's guest speaker, Acting Director of Athletics David Joyner. Hors d'ouvres will be available at 6 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. (doors open at 5:45 p.m.). The ticket price is $40, and proceeds from the event will benefit Penn State Shenango student scholarships. (more)

Shenango presents series returns to Penn State with Viva Voce!

The community is invited to a free concert as the local Penn State campus hosts Viva Voce! for the return of its "Shenango Presents" series at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, February 3, in the Penn State Shenango auditorium located in downtown Sharon. Viva Voce! specializes in solo, duo, trio, and quartet music from various eras and in different genres. The evening's program will feature several Anthems of Creation, written by Shenango campus music instructor and New Castle native Ferruccio Germani, and six Liebeslieder Walzer by Brahms. (more)

The Penn State Shenango family has been actively involved in efforts to make the community's holidays brighter. From collecting mittens and gloves during this year's Hermitage Light Up Parade, to collecting toys for the local Toys for Tots program, to gathering food and donating money to the Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County, the Shenango campus community always is reaching out to those who are in need. Penn State Shenango will hold its fall commencement ceremony at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16, in the Shenango campus auditorium with a reception immediately following. Fred Leeds, Shenango campus chancellor, will confer baccalaureate and associate degrees on 61 graduating students. This year, Shenango campus welcomes Pennsylvania State Rep. Mark Longietti, of the 7th Legislative District in Mercer County, as its guest speaker. (more)

Penn State Shenango held vigil for victims of child abuse Nov. 29

In light of the recent events at Penn State, the Shenango campus welcomed the community to a public vigil in support of victims of child abuse on Tuesday, Nov. 29 in the campus' auditorium, located on Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. Following the vigil, a reception was held in the Great Hall.

The event will include a presentation on child abuse and its impact on victims. Available resources and various strategies for supporting a loved one's healing process also will be discussed. William McGuigan, associate professor of human development and family studies at the Shenango campus, and Nikki Cadman from AWARE, will be the keynote speakers.

A collection for new and gently used toys for the children who are staying in AWARE shelters will be held.

Shenango to present 'Music and Misunderstandings'

"Music and Misunderstandings," Penn State Shenango's third annual Talent Show, promises to be the best yet. Acts range from a professional singer/songwriter to a stand-up comic to a polished player of an Australian didgeridoo. There is something for everyone in this show to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 and 12 in the Penn State Auditorium, located on Shenango Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. Anyone bringing a nonperishable food item for the Community Food Warehouse will receive a $1 discount off their ticket price, which is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. A portion of the profits from the evening's 50/50 and basket raffles also will go to benefit the Community Food Warehouse. (more)

For the past 16 years, a Penn State Shenango freshman has been the recipient of a four-year, full-tuition grant to Penn State funded by the Sharonsteel Foundation. This year, Nicholas Taylor of Sharon, Pa., was presented with this grant by Sharonsteel Trust Administrator Lori Darby. The Sharonsteel Foundation has contributed more than a half million dollars to the Sharonsteel Scholars program at Penn State Shenango. (more)
