A public sale of new and used pianos will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 6, at Ford Music Store Inc., 913 Chestnut Ave., Altoona, Pa. Many of the pianos on sale will be from the Yamaha Corp. of America, which has an ongoing program with Penn State's School of Music. As a result, students and faculty have benefited from the use of quality new Yamaha pianos at no cost to the school during the year. These pianos are then are offered for public sale at a significant cost reduction. (more)
Roughly 170 Penn State student-musicians experienced a rare opportunity on Tuesday night, as they performed before an enthusiastic audience in Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh. The event was the sixth annual Penn State President's Concert, a collaboration among the School of Music, the Alumni Association and the Office of the President. "It was absolutely fabulous singing up there. I loved the opportunity," said Nathan Owen, who played Grandpa Moss in the Penn State Opera Theatre's portion of the program. "Singing in a hall with such great acoustics is really great. It requires a different kind of singing, a different kind of listening to yourself. It's really interesting, and really cool." The Penn State President's Concert has come full circle. The sixth annual event, designed to showcase School of Music ensembles to alumni and prospective students, will feature the Penn State Glee Club, Opera Theatre and Philharmonic Orchestra Feb. 28 at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, the site of the first such concert in 2007. "The Penn State President's Concert is an event our students anticipate every year, because it gives them the opportunity to perform in a major concert hall to an audience of alumni and prospective students," said Sue Haug, director of the School of Music. "It's an opportunity you just don't get at most universities." (more)
The Penn State Glee Club performed the world premiere of 'Everyone Burst Out Singing,' the U.S. premiere of 'Ancient Forests Once Stood Here' and a rousing chorus from Gilbert and Sullivan among other selections at its fall concert Saturday, Nov. 5, in Schwab Auditorium on Penn State's University Park campus. The group is one of three that will perform during the Penn State President's Concert, scheduled for Feb. 28 in Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh. The Glee Club is the oldest student organization at Penn State. Membership is by audition and is open to all undergraduate and graduate students at University Park. Darrin Thornton, associate professor of music education at Penn State, is the recipient of the 2012 Outstanding Dissertation Award, given by the Adult and Community Music Education Special Research Interest Group (SRIG), National Association for Music Education (NAfME), for his dissertation, "Adult Music Engagement: Perspectives from Three Musically Engaged Classes." He will present his paper at the SRIG session of the NAfME conference in St. Louis, March 2012. Thornton received his doctorate in music education from Penn State in December 2010. (more)

When Blue Band President Matt Wagner arrived at the Blue Band Building bright and early in the morning on Aug. 16, he found he wasn't the first one there. "Auditions weren't supposed to begin until 8 a.m. but there was a line at the door when I got here at 7," he said. He and the other Blue Band officers are running most of the operation at the building, as prospective rookies (p-rookies) descend upon the University Park campus to audition for their chance to be part of the Blue Band. The p-rookies get their first marching lesson this evening, with more instruction and practice on Wednesday. Blue Band Director O. Richard Bundy makes the final selections on Wednesday night, and band came - with three-a-day practices begins Thursday, Aug. 18. The band will march through the tunnel and onto the field at Beaver Stadium just 18 days from audition day, on Saturday, Sept. 3. This week, Music at Penn's Woods will close out the summer's series of concerts on Penn State's University Park campus with a potpourri of music from Brahms, Beethoven, Poulenc and de Falla. Performances will take place on June 23 and 25, and great seats still are available. (more)
