The Penn State Coaches Caravan will make six stops at events in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut as the tour enters its second week. Football Coach Bill O'Brien will be joined by Lady Lion basketball coach Coquese Washington, men's golf coach Greg Nye and women's volleyball coach Russ Rose at various stops throughout the week. The Coaches Caravan, presented by the Nittany Lion Club and Penn State Alumni Association, is making 18 stops in seven states and Washington, D.C. O'Brien will be at each event, with 11 other coaches appearing at various stops. (more)
The No. 8 Penn State women's volleyball team (28-5) collected five All-Mideast Region honors, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced today. Senior Blair Brown (Purcellville, Va.), senior Arielle Wilson (Broadview, Ill.) and freshman Deja McClendon (Louisville, Ky.) were three of 14 players named to the all-region squad. In addition, McClendon was named the Mideast Region Freshman of the Year and head coach Russ Rose was honored as the Mideast Region Coach of the Year. (more)
After winning its eighth straight and 14th overall Big Ten title, the No. 8 Penn State women's volleyball team secured three individual awards from the league, conference officials announced Tuesday (Nov. 30). Head coach Russ Rose was named Coach of the Year by his peers and the media, senior opposite Blair Brown (Purcellville, Va.) was selected Player of the Year and freshman outside hitter Deja McClendon (Louisville, Ky.) earned Freshman of the Year. Penn State's four-time AVCA First Team All-American Megan Hodge (Durham, N.C.) has been named the 2009-10 Suzy Favor Female Athlete of the Year by the Big Ten. Penn State's first Honda-Broderick Cup winner, Hodge led the Penn State women's volleyball team to three straight NCAA National Championships and back-to-back undefeated seasons. Ohio State men's basketball player Evan Turner was named this year's Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year. The Big Ten Network also recognized the women's volleyball team and head coach Russ Rose in its third annual Big Ten Network Awards. Rose was named the Big Ten Network's Women's Coach of the Year, while the Nittany Lion women's volleyball team was named the Women's Team of the Year. (more)
The Big Ten Network will recognize the best of Big Ten sports in 2009-10 with the third annual Big Ten Network Awards live at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, June 23. Mike Hall and Rick Pizzo will host the one-hour show. On Feb. 22, U.S. Congressman Glenn Thompson presented Penn State Women's Volleyball Coach Russ Rose with a signed copy of the resolution passed by the U.S. House of Representatives congratulating the team on its third straight national championship. The resolution "congratulates the Penn State women's volleyball team and the University's athletes, coaches, faculty, students and alumni on the winning of the 2009 NCAA Division I women's volleyball championship" and recognizes Penn State for its "excellence as an institution of higher education." Penn State women's volleyball coach Russ Rose is to be inducted into The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. The induction ceremony will take place on April 18, 2010 at the Suffolk Y JCC in Commack, N.Y., the home of The Hall of Fame. "We are thrilled to be honoring Coach Russ Rose of Penn State," said Hall of Fame Chariman Lynne Kramer. "He represents the best in college sports." (more)
