Rural America is vastly different than it was 50 years ago. Prosperity for many rural communities depends on innovative income-generating strategies, such as extracting alternative energy sources. Today, agricultural producers need to be sophisticated business professionals. With one of the nation's largest rural populations, Pennsylvania's economy is dependent upon its rural communities. This fall, Penn State Law will launch its new Rural Economic Development Clinic to support this important sector of our economy, giving law students hands-on learning experience in a wide variety of legal issues specifically faced by agricultural businesses and rural communities. Ross Pifer, an experienced agricultural law attorney, has been named director of the Agricultural Law Resource and Reference Center at Penn State's Dickinson School of Law. Pifer, who was born and raised on a fifth-generation farm near Punxsutawney, assumed his new duties on March 3. In his capacity as director, Pifer will utilize his extensive knowledge about agriculture and the law to manage the center, providing resources and support through outreach, and the development of educational materials and programs, including the center's Web site.
