New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Judge Marjorie O. Rendell, Pennsylvania's first lady, was joined Wednesday by pediatric patients of Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital to help light the Capitol Christmas tree in Harrisburg via satellite feed from Hershey. Rendell led the children in the Hershey countdown to light the tree as Gov. Edward G. Penn State Board ratifies lower tuition option

In a special meeting today (July 17) Penn State's Board of Trustees ratified an administrative recommendation to institute the lowest tuition increase in the school's recent history. The figures range from an increase of 3.7 percent to 4.5 percent for undergraduate students depending on campus location and residency status. The Executive Committee of the Board agreed to implement this tuition schedule proposed Thursday by the University's leadership. The Executive Committee's decision will be presented to the full board for its concurrence in September at the Trustees' regular meeting. Fall semester tuition bills are expected to go out this weekend. (more)

Faced with the continuing state budget impasse and Gov. Ed Rendell's June 26 proposal to cut Penn State's appropriation by nearly $61 million, the University's Board of Trustees and administration made the unprecedented decision today (July 10) to approve two different tuition schedules. The one adopted will depend on the size and timing of the final appropriation determined by the Pennsylvania General Assembly and the governor. (more)

In a June 29 letter to the U.S. Department of Education, Penn State President Graham Spanier has urged federal officials to carefully review the Commonwealth's application for education-related stimulus funding. The application, submitted by Gov. Ed Rendell, indicates that Pennsylvania's four state-related institutions, including Penn State, are not public universities -- contrary to their missions and history of state support. (more)

In introducing a new round of potential state budget cuts for 2009-10, Gov. Ed Rendell proposed last week what could be devastating cuts in the Commonwealth's appropriation to Penn State. The governor's proposed reductions would set the University back to its appropriation level in 1996. Penn State would go from the current year's initial appropriation of $338 million to $278 million in 2009-10. (more)

Penn State will receive a 1.2 percent increase in state appropriation for the 2008-09 fiscal year as a result of the new budget approved by the Senate and the House and signed by Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell over the holiday weekend. The total appropriation for Penn State for this fiscal year is $338.4 million, an increase of $4.1 million over last year. (more)
