A special blood drive and national bone marrow registry campaign is being held at Penn State in memory of Ed Thompson, former director of development for the Office of Educational Equity. The campaign, part of the annual Charles Drew Blood Donation Campaign, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 9 and 10 in Heritage Hall at the HUB-Robeson Center on the University Park campus. Penn State will continue its friendly rivalry with Michigan State off the football field in the 18th annual Penn State vs. Michigan State Blood Donor Challenge and the Alpha Epsilon Delta Blood Cup. The Challenge begins Oct. 31 and continues through Nov. 17. (more)
An emergency donor appeal has been issued by the Greater Alleghenies Blood Services Region, after American Red Cross officials announced that blood inventories have dropped to the lowest levels in years. All blood types are needed, but types O positive and A positive are experiencing particularly high demand. Several collections are planned on the University Park campus in the coming weeks. This June, Penn State blood donors will be able to help save a life and will have a chance to win great seats to this year's Fourth Fest, to be held July 4 on the University Park campus. Thousands of lives have been touched by the generosity of more than 2,500 blood donors who participated in the inaugural Blood Battle between Penn State and Ohio State. Though Penn State fell just short of victory (1260 units for Penn State, 1287 for Ohio State), 60 more units of blood were collected on campus this year than during the same time last year.
Based on the program's success, the Penn State Student Red Cross Club already has issued a challenge to Ohio State for a rematch next spring. Until then, the need for blood donations is constant. Immediately following the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11, Penn State student volunteers mobilized to raise money for those affected by the disaster. Their various efforts have collected $14,397 for the American Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Tsunmai relief fund. "I am overwhelmed by the number of people who came out to support Japan," said Rino Sato, president of the Penn State Student Red Cross Club. "This was close to the heart for people with family in Japan, but there were people who did not know anyone in Japan and still came out to help. We were very inspired by them." (more)
The University Park Libraries Employees Association is teaming up with the American Red Cross and the Penn State Student Red Cross Club for a Saint Patrick's Day blood drive. The drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 17th at the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center, and will feature Saint Patrick's Day-themed snacks and decorations. The American Red Cross is still under a National Blood Appeal, and all blood types are urgently needed. (more)

With a last-day surge on Thursday, Nov. 18, Penn State slipped past Michigan State in the annual Blood Donor Challenge held between the two schools. During the day, Penn state collected 312 units of blood to Michigan State's 214, bringing the final tally for the three-week challenge to 2,019 to 2,008 in favor of Penn State. Penn State has won the annual competition for five years straight, and has won 12 times since the series began 17 years ago. (more)
For the 17th year, Penn State and Michigan State will extend their rivalry off the football field as they compete in the annual Blood Donor Challenge. This friendly competition pits the two schools against one another in a bid to help their respective communities. This year's challenge begins on Monday, Nov. 1, and continues through Thursday. Nov. 18. The donor challenge is held at a time to increase blood supplies in advance of the holiday season, with the hope that the enthusiasm surrounding the competition also will raise awareness and reinforce the importance of blood donation.
