A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Richard Alley, the Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences at Penn State, will be the host of three hours of programming on WPSU-TV on Earth Day, April 22. The premiere of two new installments of his "Earth: The Operators' Manual" series, focused on climate change and sustainable energy, will occur at 7 p.m., with the program "Energy Quest U.S.A.," and at 10:30 p.m., with "Powering the Planet." The new shows will be preceded by an encore of the original program, "Earth: The Operators' Manual," at 6 p.m. (more)

'Conversations' to offer meet-and-greet with President Erickson

Rodney Erickson, executive vice president and provost, reminded those assembled that about 700 students attending Penn State are from the nations affected by the tragedy. "We are all saddened by the terrible loss of life and livelihood in the (region surrounding the) Indian Ocean," he said.

On the next program of "Conversations from Penn State," President Erickson will discuss his life before the presidency and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the University. Residents of Huntingdon County are invited to record an interview or conversation with someone who inspired or influenced them, or perhaps is a part of local history -- then preserve it for others to hear and enjoy. WPSU-FM, central Pennsylvania's NPR affiliate, will be hosting this local version of StoryCorps, a national oral history project that records extraordinary stories of ordinary people, preserving and sharing the stories of Americans from all backgrounds and beliefs. WPSU is kicking off the new year with the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest for students in kindergarten through third grade. The contest is a national initiative designed to promote the advancement of children's reading skills through hands-on, active learning. Penn State Public Broadcasting has partnered with WQED in Pittsburgh and West Virginia Public Broadcasting to offer this contest to children across Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The contest runs until Friday, April 6.

An old, but familiar debate is resurfacing among politicians in Harrisburg: should state-run liquor stores be privatized? With compelling arguments for each side, this hot-button issue continues to be in the forefront of discussions across the state.

Penn State Public Broadcasting's Patty Satalia will explore the benefits and costs of privatizing liquor stores in Pennsylvania with panel members Dave DeSimone, Wendell Young and Jay Ostrich on "Conversations Live," an interactive call-in program.

The program will air at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15, on WPSU-TV. (more)
