A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Couples who are married or living together will probably have more trouble parenting as a team if they have been violent toward one another during pregnancy, according to a team of psychologists. "This finding is helpful because working as a parenting team, in what we call the co-parenting relationship, is a key influence on everything from mothers' postpartum depression to sensitive parenting to the children's emotional and social adjustment," said Mark E. Feinberg, research professor, Prevention Research Center for the Promotion of Human Development at Penn State.

A new initiative to improve children's nutrition education and increase the amount of healthy foods available in schools is a collaboration among Penn State researchers; Pennsylvania's Departments of Health, Education, and Agriculture; Pennsylvania food manufacturers and food distributors; and school districts across the state. The project, led by Penn State and supported for two years by an $800,000 grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, seeks to improve children's understanding of nutrition and help them make smarter food choices. Doctoral candidates win SPR Cup

A team of doctoral candidates representing the College of Health and Human Development and the College of the Liberal Arts won the Society for Prevention Research (SPR) Cup at SPR's annual meeting on May 28. They competed against teams representing several other universities, and were judged by a panel of prevention research experts and the audience at the meeting. This is the second year in a row that a Penn State team has taken home the SPR Cup. (more)

Mitchell's Plain is a large, sprawling township near Cape Town in South Africa. It contains monotonous rows of houses built about 20 years ago for the "coloured" population -- one of the racial groups designated under the Apartheid system to refer to people of mixed-race. A community marked by high unemployment and poverty, there are public schools here that lock the doors during the day and are surrounded by barbed wire to keep out gangs; daily realities among students include drug addiction, pregnancy and HIV/AIDS. Despite some grim conditions in Mitchell's Plain, there is plenty to be positive about: Thanks to a Penn State-led initiative and dedicated partners, youth in the area have reported they are less likely to start drinking, less likely to smoke and have an increased knowledge of condom use.
