New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Bike tour to honor beloved professor

The fourth annual Courage to Ride Bike Tour honoring Effy Oz, professor of management information systems at Penn State Great Valley, will be held on Sunday, July 1, at the Warwick County Park, Pottstown, Pa. The bike tour offers four different routes ranging from 5 to 50 miles in length. The start times are between 7 and 8 a.m. depending on the individual route's length. While this day is dedicated to the beloved faculty member's memory, it serves a dual purpose of promoting healthy living and the Dr. Effy Oz Memorial Fund, which supports scholarships for Penn State Great Valley students. Two weeks, nearly 300 miles, two women, and nothing but their own two feet. That's right. Penn State Brandywine Chancellor Sophia Wisniewska is celebrating her love of Pennsylvania and the importance of a healthy lifestyle by walking from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia.

"This is a self improvement project," Chancellor Wisniewska said of her 300-mile trek with her friend, Marie Thibault. "This is about our love of walking and our love of Pennsylvania. We are curious about the small towns and want to meet the people who live there." (more)
