High tunnels offer an inexpensive way to extend the production season for vegetables and small fruits. They also might help eradicate a "food desert" in the southeast corner of the Keystone State, if a collaboration between Penn State Extension and community partners in Philadelphia is successful. In an effort to enhance Penn State Great Valley's collective expertise on sustainability, faculty members have founded a Consortium for Sustainable Business Development (CSBD). Established with seed funding from the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment, the CSBD will provide faculty with opportunities to foster basic and applied research, practice, education and outreach as it relates to sustainability. In turn this will lead to developing and progressing collaborations across disciplines and units at Penn State. Priscilla F. Clement, professor emerita of history and women's studies, is the author of "Blood on the Path," a spine-tingling murder mystery set in the resort town of Eagles Mere, where Clement and her family have vacationed for years. The plot involves the disappearance of a young girl during a local event in 1959 and the attempts, years later, to solve the mystery. (more)
A group of honors students are rallying the campus and community to help them collect at least 250 boxes of macaroni and cheese for Philabundance, the region's largest hunger relief organization, in an initiative they're calling "Mac Attack." (more)
For the first time in its nearly 100 year history the Sutherland Building on the campus of Penn State Abington is getting a facelift. The planned changes will indeed give a new look and presence to the building, but will have very little impact on the structure of the building itself. According to Dale Hollenbach, chief operating officer at Abington, the design calls for minor changes to the front entrance and the addition of a handicapped accessible entrance on the north side of the building. "All the other changes essentially enhance the front lawn and the approach to the building by adding a more formal plaza area where mostly blacktop paths previously existed," he said. (more)
