A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Area around former fraternity house to be closed Tuesday

Beginning Tuesday July 27, the area around the former Phi Delta Theta fraternity house (located near the intersection of Burrowes and Pollock roads at the east end of the IST Building) will be closed permanently. The area is being closed to allow contractors to begin the abatement and demolition process. All vehicles must be removed from this area by the close of business on Monday July 26. Any vehicles remaining in the lot on Tuesday July 27, will be removed at the owners expense. (more)

Penn State's Board of Trustees today (March 19) approved the purchase of property at 240 N. Burrowes Road in State College, the former home of the now-disbanded Phi Delta Theta fraternity. The University has no immediate plans for the property, which is adjacent to the core campus.

Fire at former fraternity house, all residents safely evacuated

Just before 3 a.m. today (Feb. 26) a fire broke out in the upper level of a former fraternity house at 240 N. Burrowes Street on the University Park campus. All of the residents of the former Phi Delta Theta house were evacuated safely and there were no injuries. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. (more)

University files suit against illegal fraternity

Penn State filed a lawsuit last week in Centre County Court aimed at bringing to an end several years of controversy related to the former Pennsylvania Theta chapter of the Phi Delta Theta International Fraternity on the University Park campus. The Penn State chapter of the fraternity was suspended by the General Council of the international fraternity in December 2007 because of repeated violations of the fraternity's alcohol-free housing policy. However, students continued to occupy the building at 240 N. Burrowes Road in direct violation of a State College Borough ordinance concerning boarding houses and also in violation of the deed selling the property to Phi Delta Theta. (more)

The December 2007 closing of a Penn State fraternity by its national headquarters for repeated violations of policies requires ex-Phi Delta Theta members to vacate their former fraternity house at the corner of Pollock and Burrowes Roads on the University Park campus. According to the deed for the property, the house may only be used as a chapter or fraternity house for Phi Delta Theta, and if not, the house must be sold. (more)
