A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State dedicates Tombros Varsity Clubhouse for golf teams

A formal dedication was held for the state-of-the-art Tombros Varsity Clubhouse, a new asset to the men's and women's golf teams. The dedication was held on Friday, Sept. 3, with tours, along with food and mingling. A ceremony was held behind the new Tombros Varsity Clubhouse in a large white tent, with enough people in attendance to cause standing room only. Peter and Ann Tombros, the donors of the main gift to the clubhouse, spoke on behalf of the dedication. Peter earned his baccalaureate and master's degrees from Penn State. He is currently the chair of For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students. (more)

Penn State continues to break fundraising records despite economy

For the first time in its history, Penn State has received more than $200 million in cash gifts from alumni and friends in a single fiscal year, and a record number of donors committed their support to the University during the same period. The announcement came Friday (July 9) in an annual report to the Board of Trustees by Peter Tombros, volunteer chair of For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students. (more)

Penn State received a record number of donations in fiscal 2008-09, and more alumni than ever made gifts to the University during the year, the Board of Trustees learned July 10. This broad-based philanthropy totaled $182 million in gifts for the year, the second-highest total in Penn State's history, noted Peter Tombros, volunteer chair of the University's capital campaign, in a report to the board. Penn State received slightly more than 300,000 separate gifts from all sources, and 77,658 alumni made gifts, Tombros disclosed. (more)

Campaign for Penn State Students secures $364.2 million in first year

Penn State alumni and friends gave or pledged $364.2 million during the first year of the University's new fundraising effort, For the Future, the Campaign for Penn State Students. The campaign began on Jan. 1, 2007, and is in its early leadership gifts phase. By comparison, the amount raised in those first 12 months exceeds the total sum raised -- $352 million -- during the entirety of the University's first comprehensive campaign, which ran from 1984 to 1990. University President Graham Spanier noted that 150,140 donors made commitments during the 2007 calendar year. (more)
