The July/August issue of the Penn Stater magazine features aerial photos of University Park.
Thursday, June 24, 2010

The new issue of The Penn Stater magazine offers readers an unusual perspective on the University Park campus: from above. In April, Public Information photographer Andy Colwell and Penn Stater editor Tina Hay hopped on a helicopter and spent more than an hour shooting aerial photos of the campus. The resulting photo essay is the cover story of the July-August issue of The Penn Stater, mailed free to Alumni Association members. To see a sampling of Andy Colwell's aerial photos, visit http://live.psu.edu/stilllife/2285 online. For the Penn Stater's collection of images from that shoot, visit http://www.facebook.com/thepennstater and click on the "Photos" tab. Information on joining the Alumni Association is available at http://alumni.psu.edu online. (more)

Strolling campus with the Lion Ambassadors, at night

Outside of Old Main, a group of Lion Ambassadors played the role of freshmen during the early 1900s, getting hazed by upperclassmen, as part of the annual Lantern Tours on the University Park campus put on by the group. For additional photos, click on photo above.

It's one thing to go on a campus tour with the Lion Ambassadors, those enthusiastic, backwards-walking, history-spewing students. But going on one of their Lantern Tours turns out to be a whole other experience altogether. The Lion Ambassadors -- the student corps of the Alumni Association -- offered their annual Lantern Tours on Friday night. To learn more about the tours, read Tina Hay's account in her Penn Stater blog, at http://pennstatermag.com/2009/10/10/strolling-campus-with-the-lion-ambassadors%E2%80%94at-night/ online. Penn Stater editor gets bird's-eye view of campus

See more photos from Penn Stater editor Tina Hay's helicopter ride by clicking on the image above.
Sunday, September 13, 2009

The Penn Stater magazine's editor, Tina Hay, got a little bored during the third quarter of the Penn State-Syracuse game this weekend, so she decided to hop on a state police helicopter and go for a ride. OK, that's not exactly how it happened. Her ride was set up earlier in the week. Her goal was to see how the helicopter is used to monitor traffic during football games, so she could write about it in her column in the next Penn Stater. Things didn't quite work out as planned because of the weather, but while she didn't get to see the traffic detail, she did get some spectacular shots of Penn State's University Park campus. To read about her experience, visit her blog at http://pennstatermag.wordpress.com/2009/09/12/buzzing-the-stadium/ online. To see her photos, visit http://live.psu.edu/stilllife/2140 online. (more)

Penn Stater seek stories about first days on campus

Thursday, May 21, 2009

Memories of arriving on campus last a lifetime for many alumni. Editors of The Penn Stater magazine want to hear stories about being a brand-new student on any Penn State campus. Stories about packing at home, setting up a residence hall room, tearfully saying goodbye to Mom and Dad, making first friends, getting lost on campus -- whatever stands out vividly years after graduation -- all are possibilities for submission. Penn Stater magazine seeks stories about enduring college friendships

Wednesday, July 09, 2008

Friendships formed at Penn State often last a lifetime. The Penn Stater magazine is looking for stories about groups of friends who kept in touch after graduation day, sticking together through marriages, babies, career changes, divorces, mid-life crises, even grandchildren. The editors of The Penn Stater want to hear about how groups of alums stay connected, whether it's through yearly vacations, round-robin letters or reunions. Alumni should send their stories (no more than 300 words) to The Penn Stater magazine, Hintz Family Alumni Center, University Park, Pa. 16802, e-mail them to pennstater@psu.edu or fax them to (814) 863-5690. The best stories will be included in an upcoming issue of The Penn Stater magazine. Submissions are due by Aug. 15, 2008, and may be edited for length and clarity. (more)
