The third annual WPSU Wine Festival will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel. Participants will be able to sample an unparalleled collection of wines and help support Penn State Public Broadcasting. The event, which benefits WPSU-FM, will feature nearly 300 wines from around the world and across Pennsylvania. Also, a selection of premium wines, wine accessories and art will be offered in both live and silent auctions throughout the afternoon. (more)
The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel will close temporarily following its traditional Christmas Eve dinner in The Gardens Restaurant and re-open at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2010, for business as usual. The temporary closure will consolidate the University's hospitality operations to the Nittany Lion Inn during the scheduled time that the University is closed. (more)
Teri Mikelonis makes the frequent drive to University Park from Hudson, Ohio, especially during football season, with a full trunk -- not with just her weekend travel bag, but with 26 dozen (and counting) freshly baked brownies. They are snacks for Penn State Hospitality Services staff at the Nittany Lion Inn and The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, and for a growing list of weekend hotel guests who have become her extended family. Unemployment is on the rise in Pennsylvania and across the nation. A new study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers finds employers expect to hire 22 percent fewer 2009 college graduates than they hired from the Class of 2008. But in central Pennsylvania, it's not all bad news for workers. Employers and Penn State adult students who are about to graduate, as well as University alumni and local residents, can explore job opportunities at the Central Pennsylvania Regional Career Fair on April 22. The rate of teen pregnancy is rising after a 14-year decline, and so are the societal costs. Nationally, teen childbearing costs taxpayers at least $9.1 billion a year, according to a study published by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. In Pennsylvania, nearly $400 million in tax dollars is spent annually for public health care, child welfare and other services for teen mothers, the study concludes. The Pennsylvania Learning Academy for Sexuality Education (PLASE) has been established to combat issues like unintended teen pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmissible diseases by helping young people to develop into sexually literate and healthy adults. During renovations of The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, General Manager Judy Karaky had a unique and inventive idea: to transform used guest room headboards into recycling stations for the common areas. After brainstorming different options, she decided that turning them into recycling bins had great potential. She then went to the Office of Physical Plant where Supervisor of Central Support Services Al Matyasovsky helped put the plan into action. "I thought it was a fantastic idea. I was excited about the possibility of making a quality recycling bin out of reused material that actually came from our facility," Matyasovsky said. (more)
Every spring Penn State honors several undergraduate and graduate students for extraordinary academic achievement, service and teaching accomplishments. This year, 16 individuals -- one undergraduate, two student-athletes, one recent graduate and 12 graduate students -- will be recognized at an awards ceremony Sunday, April 6, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel.
