New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State Press will hold its annual Holiday Book Sale. This year's one-day-only sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 6, in the Kern Building lobby on the University Park campus of Penn State. Faculty, staff and students will receive a 25 percent discount on their purchases at the sale and through the Press's website (using the code HS2011). There also will be a $5 book table. Penn State Press hires new journals manager

The Penn State University Press has appointed Diana Pesek as its new journals manager, effective Jan. 3, 2011. Pesek brings to the position more than 20 years of publishing experience in electronic and print production and the acquisition and management of editorial content. She graduated cum laude from Case Western Reserve University and served as senior publisher at Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (Philadelphia) and director of journals production at W.B. Saunders Company (Philadelphia). (more)

Patrick Alexander appointed as director of the University Press

Patrick Alexander has been appointed to the position of director of the Penn State University Press, effective July 2009. Sanford Thatcher, who has served as director for 20 years, will be moving to Texas, where he will continue to serve the Press as an acquiring editor. (more)
