A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

A gene thought to be associated with cancer development can be a tumor suppressor gene in mice, researchers have discovered. Understanding which genes are involved in spreading cancer could lead to future therapies. "For cancer to spread, some genes are activated, while others that would prevent cancer growth are prevented from doing their jobs. The cancer research community has thought that the gene p120, falls into the latter category," said Douglas Stairs, assistant professor of pathology, who completed this research at University of Pennsylvania and is now at Penn State College of Medicine. "In this research, the loss of the p120 gene led to the development of cancer." (more)

Penn State College of Medicine is offering a new integrated biomedical sciences graduate degree program with a unique focus on basic and translational research in the areas of human health, disease, and therapeutics. The Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program is accepting applications from students for fall 2011. This graduate program offers students an education leading to the doctoral degree. (more)

The newest video, "Advancing Surgery," shows how collaborative efforts among University researchers in engineering, materials science and medicine aim to improve endoscopic surgeries by shrinking surgeons' tools as well as patients' recovery time. Hershey Medical Center has been named a Consumer Choice Award winner for Pennsylvania by National Research Corporation (NRC), an independent health care performance measurement company based in Lincoln, Neb. For the 12th consecutive year, the Medical Center earned the award for the Harrisburg market, and for the first time, also earned recognition in State College, tying with Geisinger Medical Center.
