This year's recipient of Penn State Hershey Eye Center's Frontiers in Eye and Vision Research (FEVR) Award is Jeffrey S. Shenberger, associate professor of pediatrics and cellular and molecular physiology, for his work titled "Activation of the Unfolded Protein Response in the Mouse Model of Retinopathy of Prematurity." Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a form of proliferative retinopathy affecting premature infants. Of the most severely affected babies, nearly 500, will become legally blind each year. Shenberger hopes to better understand the underlying mechanisms for the development of ROP and ultimately contribute to the identification of novel therapeutic targets to reduce blindness from this condition. Penn State Hershey Eye Center will host the second annual Eye School, a community education event for students of all ages, from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 6, in the University Conference Center on the campus of Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Students will learn about the anatomy of the eye, treatments for common eye emergencies, ophthalmic photography, and developments in the field of ophthalmology through the ages. An unconventional pop quiz is planned to make sure you've been paying attention but, don't worry; it will be an entertaining conclusion to your morning in school. Just remember to put your answers in the form of a question. (more)
Independence Day celebrations almost always include fireworks of some kind. The Prevent Blindness America organization recommends attending professionally organized fireworks displays rather than buying and setting off your own. This view is echoed by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which collects and reports data on fireworks-related injuries every year. They report that 7,000 emergency room visits from fireworks-related injuries occurred during 2008, including seven deaths. In 2007, there were 11 deaths and 9,800 emergency room visits from fireworks-related injury. (more)
