A store that students can call their own -- literally -- The Galley opened its doors this semester at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The convenience store was proposed, chosen and funded by students and Housing and Food Services.
At approximately 1,600 square feet, The Galley is the biggest convenience store in the Penn State system. It's located next to Bruno's -- a cafe in the Reed Union Building -- and is a one-stop shop for snack foods, toiletries and other student needs. (more)
Penn State's online campus, the World Campus, is the No. 1 online institution for 2011, and the University's portfolio of online information sciences and technology degrees also is No. 1 nationally among information technology (IT) degrees, according to The Best Colleges. A third online program, the MBA program (iMBA), ranks No. 9 among the 25 Best Online MBA Degree Programs. The Best Colleges produces independent evaluations of colleges and universities to aid prospective students. World Campus leads the Top 25 Online Colleges and Universities list, while Penn State's associate, bachelor's and master's degrees in information sciences and technology put the University in first place in the Top 10 Best Colleges for Online Information Technology Degrees list. Recent research suggests that the moon we gaze up at may be slightly smaller than the one our ancestors saw, said Darren Williams, associate professor of astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. In August, NASA published new high-resolution images that show cliffs, called lobate scarps, all over the surface of the moon -- evidence that the moon is getting gradually smaller, researchers say. Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will purchase Gospel Hill Golf and Country Club Inc., 4415 Steimer Road, from owners Rebecca K. Kathman and Linda K. Milton. The Penn State Board of Trustees approved the purchase Friday (May 14). "The golf course is a key piece of real estate near the Penn State Behrend campus," said Jack Burke, chancellor. "This property offers us a greater range of options for long-term growth and in planning for future campus enhancement." Penn State Behrend has no definitive plans for the property at this time. On Friday, May 7, Good Morning America crowned its Woman of the Year -- an Ethiopian refugee who raised five children as a single mother after her husband left her. Almaz Gebremedhin worked three jobs to provide for her family. All of her children excelled in school, and all went to Penn State on scholarships. As Emeril Lagasse entered the Erie hospital in which Gebremedhin works as a housekeeper, Penn State Erie's cheerleaders -- and of course the Nittany Lion -- were on hand to cheer her on as she was served breakfast in bed. Music at Noon: The Logan Series' October engagement transports listeners to a curious land where the overlooked bassoon rules the stage, performing jazz standards, Latin, bebop, rhythm and blues and original compositions in the bright spotlight. "Bassoon in the Wild" makes its Logan debut with a performance at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the McGarvey Commons of the college's Reed Union Building. The event is free and open to the public. On Sept. 21, Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, honored philanthropist and arts advocate Kay H. Logan in celebration of the 20th season of Music at Noon: The Logan Series, an innovative program that provides world-class chamber music in an informal, intimate atmosphere to diverse audiences. Logan, formerly of Warren, founded the noontime chamber concert series at the college in 1989. (more)
Two students at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, have tested positive for the H1N1 virus. These two students were among four who tested positive for Type A influenza at the college's Health and Wellness Center last week. Further testing, done via a nasal swab, confirmed the flu as H1N1. The college is awaiting test results on the remaining two students. (more)

One student was tested in her hometown over the weekend and is remaining at home to rest and recover. The other student was tested this morning at the college's Health and Wellness Center and is also returning home, following recommended self-isolation guidelines.
