Faculty at Penn State have created the first society dedicated to scholars of 19th-century American literary studies, C19. The C19 society is holding its first-ever conference from May 20 to 23 at the Nittany Lion Inn, bringing together 300 attendees from around the country. (more)

The commander of Pennsylvania's Air National Guard will offer the keynote speech at the 2009 Pennsylvania Statewide Interoperability Conference, a conference that is making strides in improving the way emergency personnel communicate with each another. Maj. Gen. Stephen M. Sischo, deputy adjutant general-air for the Pennsylvania National Guard, will offer the keynote address for the conference that will be held Sept. 30 to Oct. 1 at the Penn Stater Conference Center on Penn State's University Park campus. During the current economic downturn, more and more adult learners are returning to school. Penn State's population of nearly 93,000 students University-wide includes more than 25,000 adult learners -- those 24 years old and older who have returned to school after a few years, are active duty and veterans of the military or are managing multiple roles. Serving the educational needs of this growing student population is the focus of the annual Hendrick Best Practices for Adult Learners Conference, set for Monday, May 18, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel. The theme for this one-day conference is "The Changing Face of Our Campuses." (more)

The rate of teen pregnancy is rising after a 14-year decline, and so are the societal costs. Nationally, teen childbearing costs taxpayers at least $9.1 billion a year, according to a study published by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. In Pennsylvania, nearly $400 million in tax dollars is spent annually for public health care, child welfare and other services for teen mothers, the study concludes. The Pennsylvania Learning Academy for Sexuality Education (PLASE) has been established to combat issues like unintended teen pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmissible diseases by helping young people to develop into sexually literate and healthy adults. For nearly a decade, John Chapin, associate professor of communications at Penn State Beaver, has incorporated his research into his work with Crisis Center North (CCN)--a nonprofit counseling and educational resource center for victims of domestic violence in Allegheny County--to help the center refine its violence-prevention education programs. Keeping mentally and physically active has been shown in studies to help contribute to good brain health as one gets older. Penn State Conferences, a unit of Outreach, has once again partnered with Elderhostel to offer central Pennsylvania senior citizens a dozen courses--on subjects ranging from astronomy to golf to the Middle East--taught by Penn State faculty and other experts.
