New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State adult learner Nicole Bianchi studied online in public libraries between her husband's Minor League baseball games. Lt. Michael Choe, a U.S. Navy pilot, and his wife Amanda Choe juggled the challenges of military life to complete their degrees online. They and other adult students who earned their degrees at University Park campus and online through the World Campus will be honored at a Penn State Outreach graduation celebration. (more)

Obesity is rampant, food-borne illnesses are rising and the food supply chain is now global, leaving all but the largest food manufacturers scrambling to compete. How can smaller companies create healthier products, improve food safety and increase efficiencies, when they lack in-house resources? A new effort in southeastern Pennsylvania aims to address this with a center that pools Penn State, industry and other resources to help the food processing industry become more competitive. (more)

Football tailgates to be held at Reading Crowne Plaza

The Reading Crowne Plaza in Wyomissing will be the site of four Penn State football tailgate parties this year. Sponsored by the Penn State Berks Alumni Society and the Berks County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association, in conjunction with the Reading Crowne Plaza, the football tailgates will begin one hour prior to kickoff, and the cost is $3 per person (children under 13 are free).
