College For Kids (CFK) at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, is now accepting registrations for its summer 2009 program. This year's CFK offers 113 weeklong classes designed to educate, entertain and inspire young people ages 6 to 18. Classes begin the week of June 15 and continue through the week of Aug. 10; no classes will be held the week of June 29. CFK is offering 30 new programs this year, including Presque Isle Field Studies -- an all-day program based at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, Animal Education: All About Canine Companions, World Mythology and Let's Make a Movie. Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, hosted its 13th annual Math Options Career Day on May 12 for 248 seventh- and eighth-grade girls from 41 schools in Erie, Crawford, Potter and Warren counties. An outreach program hosted by Continuing Education at Penn State Behrend, Math Options is designed to spark girls' interest in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. This year's attendees participated in the annual School Challenge Contest in which individual schools complete and submit the same design project. Groups then attended three of a possible 29 interactive workshops, such as "Constructing an LED Circuit," "CSI at PSU" and "Rockets," plus a lunchtime activity fair. Representatives from eight regional organizations presented the workshops, including Penn State Behrend, GE Transportation, LORD Corporation, WJET-TV and FOX 66, Knox Law Firm, Erie Zoological Society, Carnegie Mellon University, and Wegmans School of Pharmacy. Girls entering ninth or tenth grade this fall are invited to apply to participate in a weeklong math, science and technology summer camp at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.
Math Options Summer Camp will be held on campus Monday, July 13, through Friday, July 17. Girls will be introduced to current topics and laboratory techniques in the fields of psychology, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics and engineering by Penn State Behrend faculty and mentors in the science professions. Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, presented more than 180 awards to individual students, student organizations, and faculty members and staff during the college's 48th Annual Honors and Awards Convocation. Student Affairs coordinates this annual effort to recognize members of the Penn State Behrend community for their outstanding efforts in student life, athletics, academics, and special service to the college. Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, officially broke ground on Tuesday, April 28, for the Robert and Sally Metzgar Admissions and Alumni Center. The $4.7 million two-story Metzgar Admissions and Alumni Center will consolidate several services for prospective students, current students and alumni. The 11,700-square-foot building will house the offices of five key departments -- admissions, financial aid, alumni relations, bursar and registrar -- in one central location. Each department will have space within the facility to accommodate the varying needs of those served. The new center is expected to open in fall 2010. (more)

In fact, Penn State is Pennsylvania's largest economic engine, generating more than $17 billion a year in overall economic impact and supporting more than 67,000 jobs. Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, was responsible for generating $204 million of that amount and having a total employment impact in the region equivalent to 1,370 jobs. (more)
Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, invites adults who are considering starting college or returning to their studies to attend an adult-student undergraduate admissions open house on Thursday, March 19. The open house begins at 5:30 p.m. with a one-hour exhibit fair in Roche Hall, located in the college's School of Science complex. There will be a seminar on admissions and financial aid at 6:30 p.m. in Nick Building, room 171. The evening ends with individual admissions counseling sessions in Nick Building, room 171; Nick Building is also part of the School of Science complex. (more)
The Early Learning Center at Penn State Erie has retained its accreditation as a National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Academy for Early Childhood Program -- a standard the center has maintained since its initial accreditation in 2005. "There is a major component to this accreditation that is worth noting -- participation is voluntary," said Eunice Moore, director of the Early Learning Center. "We are committed to providing the highest quality of care possible to the children and families who we serve, and we want to ensure that standard of care is maintained year after year." (more)
John D. "Jack" Burke, chancellor of Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, announced today a change in his retirement date -- from June 30, 2009 to June 30, 2010. The additional time will give him an opportunity to see a number of projects to completion. (more)
