New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

When Juan Cook Sr.'s account executive job at a printing company went to Mexico, he turned to Penn State to prepare for a new career as a certified drug and alcohol counselor. When he graduates in December, he will start a new job in the rapidly growing health care field. Cook is among nearly 283,000 workers whose jobs have been impacted by trade and globalization, according to the U.S. Labor Department. Penn State is helping laid-off workers like Cook retrain through the federal Trade and Globalization Adjustment Assistance program. (more)

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, caused by the April explosion of British Petroleum's Deepwater Horizon drilling rig that killed 11 crew members, has poured about 100 million gallons of oil into the water and caused significant damage to ecology and industry. It is already considered the largest offshore spill in U.S. history and may be among the largest spills in the world. It may also be among the worst industrial disasters in modern history. "At this point we're just going to be estimating because it is at a scale and dimension that we just haven't seen before," says environmental historian Brian Black, a professor of history and environmental studies at Penn State Altoona. Apryl Kadish, admission counselor at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, has been awarded the Superior Service to Adult Learners Award, and Penn State Altoona is the recipient of the Outstanding Adult Learner Recruitment or Retention Program Award from the Commission for Adult Learners. The commission presented its 2010 awards during the recent Hendrick Best Practices for Adult Learners Conference. (more)
