Mike Rybar made final adjustments to the Penn State Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering teams Goldberg machine prior to the 2012 Rube Goldberg competition held on Feb. 11 at Penn State's Nittany Lion Inn. Rybar and his team created a musically themed machine that needed to complete a simple task (inflate a balloon) in twenty or more elaborate steps. The annual competition is named for cartoonist Rube Goldberg who created famous artwork depicting overly complicated machines doing everyday tasks.

Pennsylvania College of Technology will again serve as a host site for the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists' Association's Sealant Saturday initiative. On March 17, local dental hygienists and dentists, as well as Penn College dental hygiene students, will volunteer to provide free oral screenings, sealants, fluoride treatments and education for children ages 7-15. Johnson Controls Inc. selected Pennsylvania College of Technology as a beta-testing site for new building automation software. The company donated equipment and software valued at more than $18,000 to be used in four facilities on campus, beginning with the Madigan Library. (more)

Pennsylvania College of Technology's Academic Success Center has expanded its tutoring services to new locations on campus. This year, on-site tutoring is available in more locations and in more majors. The list now includes a total of 18 courses or subject areas in all eight of the college's academic schools. (more)

Even when the economy slows down, skilled, specialized positions can be hard to fill. That may explain the significant presence of Fortune 500 companies at Pennsylvania College of Technology's most recent career fair. Penn College's director of career services says many of the college's programs are "recession-proof."

"Our programs provide skills that are critical regardless of economic conditions," said Jennifer McLean, Penn College's director of career services. "It doesn't matter what the Dow Jones is at when you need health care or a working HVAC system for your building. These are not luxury items. ... We produce graduates who fill needs that occur without regard for the economy." (more)
