New graduates of Penn State's Eberly College of Science listened to the commencement address provided by United States Secretary of Energy Steven Chu during spring 2012 graduation ceremonies held May 5 at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Pennsylvania manufacturers hoping to improve energy efficiency and cut down on the levels of carbon dioxide they emit can now get assistance from the Pennsylvania Technical Assistance Program (PennTAP). PennTAP is part of Penn State Outreach, the largest unified outreach organization in American higher education. Businesses that apply must be in the manufacturing sector and spend at least $1 million a year on energy costs.

According to its annual impact report, PennTAP provided 431 cases of technical assistance to clients across all 67 Pennsylvania counties in 2009. Clients reported $46.3 million in economic benefits and 477 jobs created or retained. In 2008, clients reported just more than $23 million in economic impact. (more)
