A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Survey ranks Penn State ninth in federal research R&D

Penn State ranked ninth among the nation's public universities in receiving federal research and development funds in fiscal 2008, according to a recent survey by the National Science Foundation. Penn State was awarded $405.5 million, compared to about $375 million in fiscal 2007, when it ranked it 11th among the nation's public universities. (more)

Penn State research uses federal stimulus funds for economic growth

To date, Penn State researchers have won $51 million in federal stimulus funds to support initiatives that have the potential to create and retain jobs and encourage economic development. The University received the funds through a series of competitive grants from federal agencies as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). At least eight academic colleges and administrative units were participating in 98 projects funded entirely or in part by ARRA grants, according to Senior Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School Eva J.
