Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Members of the Penn State Hershey team who joined the first Operation Smile/Partners in Health-sponsored medical mission trip to Haiti in January and February will talk about their experience during an evening presentation and question-and-answer session on Monday, March 15 in the Edward P. "Ted" Junker Auditorium on the campus of Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. The presentation, by the Penn State College of Medicine Global Health Center, begins at 7 p.m., and will feature photographs taken by J. Spence Reid during the team's mission trip. Light refreshments will be available beginning at 6:30 p.m. All members of the campus community and members of the public are welcome to attend. (more)

Several Penn State Hershey Medical Center doctors and nurses will join an effort to provide medical care to victims of the Haiti earthquake. A team of nine physicians, nurses and technicians plan to depart Thursday evening for Norfolk, Va., where they'll board a military flight to Port-au-Prince. (more)

Penn State Hershey student chapter of Operation Smile invites all runners and walkers to the inaugural "Miles for Smiles" 5K Run/Walk, Saturday, October 24. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with the race starting at 9:30 a.m. The race will take place on Penn State Milton S. Hershey Campus, starting and finishing at the University Fitness Center.
