More than 3,100 veteran and active-duty military students are using their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to earn degrees at Penn State as of spring 2011, a 21 percent increase over last year. As more troops return from Iraq and Afghanistan, this enrollment trend is likely to continue. To help faculty and staff who work with these students better understand and support their needs, a University-wide team has created five Best Practices in the Recruitment and Retention of Student Veterans programs. As more of America's veterans start using their G.I. Bill benefits at Penn State, the need to best support them intensifies as well. To ensure that Penn State employs best practices in dealing with the unique challenges veteran students and active-duty military encounter in their quest for college degrees, a series of five free webinars, developed in collaboration with Penn State's Human Resource Development Center, is being offered this year. The nation thanks its veterans today (Nov. 11), and at Penn State, students and University programs have a long history of supporting military service in the United States. Approximately 830 Penn State students have gone to active duty since Sept. 11, 2001, according to data from the University registrar. Today, more than 2,000 student veterans are enrolled University-wide at Penn State. (more)

Nearly 300 Penn State alumni and friends, most of them military veterans, have contributed approximately $51,000 to endow a scholarship that will assist veterans or dependents of veterans at the University who have a demonstrated financial need and have achieved superior academic records. Graduate or undergraduate students in any degree program at any Penn State location are eligible for the Veterans Special Needs Endowed Scholarship, which will be awarded for the first time in the spring 2009 semester.
