Without the research of Herschel Leibowitz, we would not understand why drivers make often fatal errors when driving across railroad crossings and crashing with an oncoming train. He conducted groundbreaking research on human vision and perception, and the causes and mitigation of human error, especially the speed of large objects such as trains. Considered one of the most influential scientists in the past 50 years in the area of experimental psychology, Leibowitz, 85, the Evan Pugh emeritus professor of psychology at Penn State, died Feb. 13, 2011, at Mt. Nittany Medical Center, surrounded by his family. (more)
Penn State officials on Saturday reported the death of Trustee Emeritus Stanley G. Schaffer on Friday, Jan. 28. Schaffer served as a member of Penn State's Board of Trustees from 1976 until 1992. He was president of Duquesne Light from 1968 until his retirement in 1983. (more)
In a statement released today (Jan. 23), Penn State Board of Trustees President Steve Garban announced the death and mourned the loss of William A. Schreyer, chairman emeritus of Merrill Lynch & Co Inc., and one of the University's most prominent alumni and supporters. Schreyer, a class of 1948 graduate who served as president of Penn State's Board of Trustees and as chair of its first major fundraising campaign, died in Princeton, N.J., on Jan. 22. Schreyer's legacy includes the nationally recognized honors college at Penn State that bears his name. (more)
Penn State's News and Microforms Library has recently created an index to the obituaries published from 1937-1980 in the "The Centre Daily Times," central Pennsylvania's primary newspaper. The online index is freely available to Pennsylvania historical societies, genealogists, researchers and other Pennsylvania newspapers. The index allows a user to find the reference to the obituary by entering a last name, first name, maiden name or obituary date range. Obituaries can then be viewed on microfilm available in the News and Microforms Library. Marlene Guers, interim director of Academic Affairs and senior instructor in mathematics at Penn State Hazleton, died Nov. 19 at her home after a brief illness. An instructor since 1981, Guers served the students and faculty in a variety of positions in addition to teaching a variety of mathematics courses, including coordinator of the campus honors program and part-time faculty coordinator. Penn State Berks lost one of its most well-liked faculty members, Paul Frye, lecturer in communication arts and sciences, on Monday, Nov. 15, as the result of an automobile accident. The campus will hold a memorial service from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 29, at the Labyrinth Garden, located on the Janssen Conference Center Complex. (more)

Penn State Mont Alto is mourning the loss of one of its alums, David L. Grove, who was killed in the line of duty on Nov. 11. A wildlife conservation officer, Grove attended the campus from 2000 to 2002 before completing his bachelor's degree in wildlife sciences from the College of Agricultural Sciences at University Park in 2004. He was shot and killed while arresting a suspected poacher in Adams County. According to a Pennsylvania Game Commission press release, the last time a game commission officer was killed in the line of duty was Nov. 7, 1915. (more)
