A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Worthington Scranton creates music technology classroom

This past month, employees from Penn State Worthington Scranton's Information Technology Services Deparment presented the campus' recent conversion of a standard classroom to a music technology classroom at the Tech Pros 2012 Conference.

Their project involved the creation of a multi-functional music and technology classroom that is now used as a practice space by the campus' musical performing groups; as a classroom for a new music technology course, in which music instruction is combined with computer programming classes; as well as a general classroom space that is used on a daily basis by a number of faculty from different disciplines.

Each year, Penn State Worthington Scranton honors and recognizes student leaders, volunteers and student groups for their contributions to the campus and the community at an annual awards event held at the campus. A highlight of the evening is the presentation of three campus awards that have been set up by campus donors to celebrate students who show excellence and are actively involved in the campus community.

Mary-Beth Krogh-Jespersen, campus chancellor, presented this year's Eric A. and Josephine S. Walker Award to Heather Konrad. Acting Director of Student Services Matthew Nied presented the Patrick J. Rose Award for Excellence in Student Leadership and Service to Nisherag Gandhi. The Greater Scranton Penn State Chapter's Pride of Lions Award was presented to Allison DeWitt by Athletic Director Jeff Mallas. (more)

Michael Evans, nursing instructor, and Tierney Lyons, reference librarian, recently presented their research titled, "The Use of Asynchronous Discussion Boards to Increase Student Learning: An Interdisciplinary Approach" at the Sigma Theta Tau International Beta Sigma Chapter Research Day at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, Pa. The study was conducted with the help of a Teaching Project Grant from the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence.

The pair's research focused on whether the use of asynchronous discussion boards as an adjunctive teaching strategy to traditional classroom lecture in an undergraduate nursing research course leads to differences in student satisfaction and reflective thinking. (more)

Eva Tettenborn, associate professor of English and program coordinator of American Studies at Penn State Worthington Scranton, has been selected as a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Scholar and will participate in the 2012 NEH Summer Institute's "Contemporary African American Literature."

Dr. Tettenborn was selected as an NEH Summer Scholar from a national applicant pool to attend one of 20 seminars and institutes supported by the NEH.

The Penn State Worthington Scranton Alumni Society will host its annual Breakfast with the Nittany Lion from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, April 22, in The View Cafe, in the campus' Study Learning Center. Society members and volunteers will serve up a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs, pancakes and sausage, along with juice, milk and coffee. There will also be face-painting, coloring books and photos with the Nittany Lion.

Performances take place at 7 p.m. on April 12, 13 and 14, with a matinee performance at 2 p.m. on April 15. Worthington Scranton campus jazz band, chorale to perform April 22

The Penn State Worthington Scranton Chorale and Jazz Band directed by Sharon Ann Toman will present its annual spring concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, in the campus' Gallagher Conference Center. This concert is free and open to the public.

The Chorale will sing a variety of tradition, pop, and Broadway choral songs. The Jazz Band will perform a variety of jazz, pop classics, rhythm and blues, big band and contemporary music.
