Jyotsna "Josi" Kalavar, associate professor of human development and family studies at Penn State New Kensington, received the John Romano Faculty/Staff Diversity Recognition Award. The award recognizes Penn State faculty and staff who consistently promote multiculturalism and demonstrate concern for the needs of multicultural students.
"This award was given in recognition of my efforts to internationalize the curriculum at Penn State New Kensington by instituting a nation of focus each year here," she said. (more)
Sports, scrapbooking and STEM-related subjects are just a few of the offerings of this summer's Kids in College program, which begins in June at Penn State New Kensington. A range of classes is available for students in grades one through 12. The program's offerings continue to expand and evolve as it enters its 25th year. According to Jana Welch, youth program coordinator in Penn State New Kensington's continuing education department, this summer's line up of camps will offer not only established favorites but also seven new programs.
"Every year we like to add new and exciting camps along with our camps that continue to be successful," she said. "We take pride in serving the community and offering these programs each summer. We have many students return each year, so we feel we are fulfilling their needs." (more)
On May 5, Chancellor Kevin Snider conferred degrees to 77 graduates at the 53rd spring commencement exercises at Penn State New Kensington.
"We do this every year and every year I'm amazed at the accomplishments of these students. This year is no exception," Snider said. "It's just a time to celebrate a lot of great accomplishments." (more)
Penn State New Kensington students, staff and faculty visited South Dakota May 6 to 12 on a service trip where they installed computers at a women's shelter and a children's home, spent time with children at a Native American school and learned about the history and culture of the area. (more)
Penn State New Kensington has received funding from the Buhl Foundation to again support a STEM initiative that sends science and education majors into local classrooms. The $20,000 award will help the campus to continue the GECKO program. The acronym GECKO stands for "Green Environmental Challenge for Kids Outreach." The Buhl Foundation has supported the program previously. (more)
A number of campus renovation projects are taking place this summer at Penn State New Kensington. Among these projects are upgrades to parking lots, chemistry labs and the Athletic Center.
Construction starts this month and continues through the summer with final completion planned for Aug. 17, according to Jason Bush, director of business and finance at Penn State New Kensington. (more)
Andrea Adolph has accepted the position of director of academic affairs at Penn State New Kensington, replacing Arlene Hall, who retires this summer.
Adolph is currently associate professor of English and coordinator of service-learning at Kent State University of Stark in North Canton, Ohio. Her work there has involved academic planning and program development. She also brings from that position knowledge of accreditation and assessment processes and experience in budget and labor oversight. (more)
The Penn State Coaches Caravan will make a stop in Pittsburgh at 6 p.m. May 14 at the Omni William Penn Hotel, giving fans the chance to meet with Nittany Lion football coach Bill O'Brien as well as several other Penn State coaches.
The first-year coach is participating in all 18 Coaches Caravan stops. Pittsburgh's stop will feature an evening reception and program.
"I felt it was important to get out and meet people around the state and the surrounding states," he said. "Penn State is a special place with a huge alumni network." (more)
A May art exhibit is showcasing the work of visiting scholar Shenyu Xu and her students at Penn State New Kensington. According to the Chinese artist, she couldn't be more pleased.
A reception held May 3, which Xu described as "wonderful", welcomed Penn State and the public to meet with the Chinese artist and her students. The visiting scholar came to Penn State New Kensington campus in January. Classes Xu teaches at Penn State include a course about art and Chinese culture and another which she paired up with professor of visual arts Charles W. "Bud" Gibbons to teach, Drawing and Painting. The new Student Government Association officers for Penn State New Kensington recently were named. The 2012-13 officers were elected in April.
According to Lauren Blum, who works closely with the SGA treasurer and vice president, the students are looking forward to serving their student body. Blum is SGA co-adviser along with Director of Student Affairs Theresa Bonk. (more)
