Firefighters battled a controlled blaze on the tarmac at Penn State's University Park Airport on May 23 during a full-scale emergency exercise. The exercise was designed to provide real-time training and recertification for emergency response personnel from around the Centre Region.

A Moroccan farmer taught Penn State students about the properties of vetiver grass, including its ability to clean wastewater. The grass could be used as part of a solution to water-quality problems being experienced in Assoul, Morocco, where students spent time recently.

Penn State helps establish consortium to train naval engineers

Penn State is a founding member of a new consortium centered on training naval systems engineers for the Navy's civilian acquisition, engineering and science workforce. Established by Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) through a five-year, $7.5 million contract, the Naval Engineering Education Consortium (NEEC) comprises 15 colleges and universities, along with the American Society of Naval Engineers and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. Mechanical engineering's Kuo receives Navy recognition

Kenneth Kuo, distinguished professor of mechanical engineering and director of the High Pressure Combustion Laboratory, was honored for his work by the Naval Sea Systems Command at its National Capital Region Energetics Symposium on April 28. Steve Mitchell, the U.S. Navy's technical director, presented Kuo with a plaque that recognized him for his contributions to the Navy's combustion and propulsion program. Kuo has been a member of the Penn State faculty for more than 36 years. His research interests include combustion, rocket propulsion, gun interior ballistics, industrial hazards and high-temperature insulation material erosion processes. (more)
