Michael Evans, nursing instructor, and Tierney Lyons, reference librarian, recently presented their research titled, "The Use of Asynchronous Discussion Boards to Increase Student Learning: An Interdisciplinary Approach" at the Sigma Theta Tau International Beta Sigma Chapter Research Day at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, Pa. The study was conducted with the help of a Teaching Project Grant from the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence.
The pair's research focused on whether the use of asynchronous discussion boards as an adjunctive teaching strategy to traditional classroom lecture in an undergraduate nursing research course leads to differences in student satisfaction and reflective thinking. (more)
Advisers and honors college students are reminded that March 19 is the deadline to submit nominations for the Penn State University Libraries Schreyer Honors College Scholars Annual Competition for the Outstanding Undergraduate Honors Thesis. The winner will receive an award of $1,000. Schreyer Scholars graduating in summer 2011, fall 2011, or spring 2012 from throughout Penn State are eligible for the spring 2012 award. The Paterno Library and central Pattee Library on Penn State's University Park campus will close at 5 p.m. on Monday, June 7, and reopen at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8, because of construction. Pattee Library west, including the News and Microforms Library and Course Reserves will remain open until 9 p.m. The entrance to this area is adjacent to MacKinnon's Cafe. An electrical shutdown will close Pattee and Paterno libraries on Penn State's University Park campus from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. on Friday, May 21. Employees in these areas should not report to work until 8:30 a.m. The shutdown will not affect normal operating hours on Thursday, May 20. (more)
During Thanksgiving break, the University Park Libraries will be closed on Saturday, Nov. 21, and Sunday, Nov. 22. They will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday Nov. 23 to Wednesday, Nov. 25. The Libraries will then close for Thanksgiving and reopen on Sunday, Nov. 29, at noon, when the regular fall semester schedule resumes. All University Park branch libraries and the "study all night" area in the ground and first floors of Pattee Library, west, will follow this schedule. (more)
The Center for Democratic Deliberation will present Hooman Majd, author and speaker about Iran, in a talk at 7 p.m. on Oct. 15, in Foster Auditorium in Pattee Library on Penn State's University Park campus. Majd's talk is titled "The Ayatollah Begs to Differ: Culture, Politics, Ethics, and the Making of Modern Iran." All Penn State students, faculty, staff and the public are invited to attend. (more)
Two of the biggest champions of University Libraries are Joe and Sue Paterno. Since the 1980s, they have led by example by investing their own money in Penn State's libraries and encouraging noteworthy contributions from others. This fall, Ellysa Stern Cahoy, assistant head of Library Learning Services, is developing ways to help students acquire literacies they need to succeed in college and the workplace -- beyond traditional reading and writing. Cahoy works with faculty to help students build skills in finding and evaluating information, creating and critiquing multimedia, and choosing the right technology tools for the right task. (more)
A library's digital presence is open around the clock, and easy access to material has changed the nature of scholarship, making it more collaborative than before, notes Lisa German, assistant dean for Technical and Collections Services. One future role of the library and librarians will lie in helping students navigate a vast and shifting sea of information. (more)
